If taking Zion wakens the Sleepers prematurely, then what? Those Sleepers will likely have control of the OBS. In that case taking Zion actually enables the CoGA to win. The war aim is not necessarily to defeat the CoGA militarily, it is to defeat the mindset supporting the proscriptions.

Bearing that in mind it might be better to to work at spreading technology until the Sleepers awaken according to the scheduled time rather than risk their waking early before technology can spread beyond the Empire of Charis.

It would be the heights of stupidity to allow the CoG to build up their tech base. So their (the Allies) chief war aim must be to take Zion, and topple the CoG as quick as possible.
But in doing that they might bring the jack-in-the-box into play!

I see a confrontation between Merlin and the sleepers. I think the Temple has to be taken and the basement entered to seize control of the computer. No way do you allow those AIs to wake up on its own terms.

Hi N7AXW, or Don as you prefer;

I agree the OBS needs to be resolved soon, to move on to the 'great reveal', the next big crisis before getting back to the Gbabba.

Given than no one in the temple is aware of THE THING IN THE BASEMENT, I believe a raid or capture of the temple is possible.

Up to now Merlin has been preaching caution regarding the temple, despite his trip to Zion, but the ultimate purpose of his next trip to Zion with Aivah may be to discover the vicars are ignorant of the rest of the basements and power sources, ie no one there can awaken it, or a combination of something Aivah says or does about being able to enter the temple secretly thanks to the Wylsynn brothers showing her, so it is safe to approach and seize the temple [temporarily] possibly with the caveat if federation tech isn't used.

That might be part of the rest of their current discussion, Aivah may think of Merlin as the Wylsynn's 'promised one' etc, or someone they meet in Zion does [Duchairn?], that opens all sorts of possibilities for the inner circle.

We've discussed in previous threads that if 24th century tech is the trigger then 22nd or 23rd century tech might be able to get by if its not perceived as a threat, such as a heat charged worm that just searches for power sources.

Interesting times, people, interesting times.

That might very well be the ultimate aim of the circle surrounding Merlin, but they’d be hard pressed to explain to those not in the know why they are hunkering down instead of pushing on. It would be both tactically and strategically hard to explain. Especially to the Allies…
No, I think they’ll press the attack, and then we’ll see what surprise is waiting.
After which a slave insurection might be moot!

Totally agree. If Duchairn kneecaps Clyntahn and offers the EoC all their stated war aims, the good guys will likely take the offer of a negotiated peace. They have to for that same reasons you posted. How to explain rejecting all your side claims it wants to your supporters.

Duchairn will negotiate honestly. Magwair, not so much. If there is a negotiated peace, Magwair will make sure a cold war arms race ensues. That's not a bad way to speed tech development along.

Hmmm…combined with the assault carrier and weapons in Nimue’s cave, and a short dash to Zion, and hope-to-hell that the orbital bombardment system has a fail-safe the prevents it from targeting the Temple.
