Lt. Gov. Tiilikainen had the brains and intestinal fortitude to get many of the people of her system out of the way of the violence. While she did this in a round-about way, she did do it.

What do you think the consequences will be for her? How likely is it that she will remain the voice of reason in Saltash?

IMPO, LT. Gov. Tiilikainen will, because she has shown both FF and the Saltash people she has a brain that works and that she does care about the consequences, end up leading a revolt against OFS. Captain Myau will realize that her best chance is backing the LT. Gov. Captain MacNaughton already has some respect for her and this incident will only add to that. His knowledge that his people need that outside influence to prevent wholesale destruction will also work in her favor. I can see Tiilikainen becoming one of the first of the "Warlords" to arise out of the collapse of the League. Especially once word of the fall of Meyers begins to get around.

Lt. Gov. Tiilikainen might easily be from Mannerheim. Same ethnic derived name. Possibly Mesa Alignment agent pre-positioned to do exactly this. Which makes her not a Sollie Bureaucrat, but a M'Align agent.

It's been mentioned that Mannerheim, like many of the other RF worlds, is outwardly anti-slavery and the vast majority of it's populace is against genetic tampering. Most people on the RF worlds DON'T know what is really going on and that their governments (or members thereof) have dark ulterior motives that >80% of the populace would not approve of. Just because someone is from Mannerheim does not necessarily make them a Malign agent - just as it has been shown that most citizens of Mesa had no clue of what the Malign is doing, even if they working in the slave trade or genetic research.

Other sollies who are not idiots, though it is probably unfair to call them bureaucrats, are the naval & marine intelligence officers and police officer on Earth who are investigating MA corruption & infiltration of the SL government. If they find hard evidence of MA involvement, what will happen when they make it public?

Their unfortunate demise due to a cell of the Ballroom attacking the building they are meeting in while planning their media release will dominate the news for a day or two.

Hi NamelessFly,

From what little textev we have, your worst predictions apparently didn't happen, rather than massacres of women "there was lots of payback" -by women, and much of the leadership elders were killed with the few left fleeing into hiding according to Mercedes Brigham in FIE, IIRC.

Masada had something near 4.5 billion population at the time of THotQ, was generally quite technophobic unlike our current legion of terrorists, NTM quite poor; the BC and DD the peeps 'sold' them being 80% of the GDP, yet that's only about $1.33 per person which is certainly pitiful.

Granted that partly because women were barred from doing anything productive, but that again is the men's stupid fault isn't it.

But the textev from 'Promised Land' and THotQ was quite explicit that the navy got a third of the GDP, which is ridiculous, NTM was extremely oriented to offense not defense, though there were some defensive forts in the Endicott system and 20 LAC's, by the time Hamish showed up there was only a DD and 2 LAC's left against his 8 very modern BC's, so it was no contest.

Against that effectively helpless planet, Hamish had nearly 6000 marines [400+ squads] aboard his 8 BC's [~17,600 combined crew], a third in powered armor, which made them almost impervious to anything the faithful had on the surface, while the skin-suits were close, plus 2-3,000 sailors in support roles also in skinsuits.

While some of the elders may have had a few hours to hide or flee, I suspect most were captured quickly thanks to the unexpected nature of the RMN's visit, and the celerity with which HA-H [we obviously need to distinguish between Hamish and Honor; does HoA-H vs HaA-H work, or is HnA-H and HmA-H better? ;) ] seized the orbitals while the other BC's took out the rest of the faithful's military capability in the system.

Given a transit time of less than 5 minutes, announcing emergency help that is an easy 3-4 digit number [#4357?] might be what needs to be broadcast for the women to call would reduce most attempted murder sprees by the remaining men.

We don't know the proportion of arable land under cultivation on Masada, or how big the 'individual' or patriarchal estates were, but if 60-75 million square miles for ~4.5 B would then mean some 60-75 persons per square mile, the majority female, probably leaving only around 6-7.5 adult men if 10% were armed at best that might fight, however pointless that might be, given how uncoordinated they'd be, since the many estates appear to be about as independent and inter-hostile as the Kzin.

Given how even a fire team could protect an estate's women if they weren't evacuated, a lot of harems could be assembled into larger more easily protected groups rather quickly without most of the estates realizing what was going on, given the RMN's ability to disrupt their primitive communications, and the RMN and RMMC's superior stealth etc.

Letting the older generation and men especially die is certainly happening, and many of the younger rising generation have apparently eagerly accepted the modern technological society that Manticore has offered, so I think Allison's discovery has been shared as well.

Iraq and Afghanistan offer two very good examples of how difficult it is to transform a culture. Remember how Bush was castigated for not deploying a large enough invasion force to properely occupy Iraq? IIRC, the ratio was something like 50,000 troops deployed to a country of 50 million people or 1000:1 ratio. The surge brought the ratio to 200:1 which seemed to work until the troops were withdrawn.

Even if a 1,000:1 ratio is adequate, Manticore would have to deploy an occupation army of about 5 million troops to impose any type of societal change on Masada. Any bright ideas about inviting women to emigrate would just provoke the Masadan males to kill a lot of women.

The best that Manticore can hope for is to interdict Masada and prevent the construction of serious weaponry including planet based missiles similar to those at Blackbird.

Well, as he was only Hamish Alexander at the time, HA would be correct.

I'd rather go with WH though, I think it's a bit more distinctive myself.

Regarding Saltash's Assistant Governor: Hopefully she'll have been
smart enough to follow the SL bureaucracy's standard procedure
of CYOAT (Cover Your Own A** Thoroughly), and will have made record-
ings of every meeting that she had with Duenas regarding his less-
than-optimal plan to seize Manticoran freighters and their crews. That way, when the moron tries to fasten the blame on his subord-
inates, she'll have more than enough dirt on him that he'll be the
one left to dangle in the breeze once it's conclusively proven
beyond any shadow of a doubt just how incompetent he really is.

Either that, or he could find himself being "retired" the hard way
by the Saltashan citizenry -- possibly with help from certain
parties within his own administration ( )...

Hi Paldin62,

Welcome to the forum, enjoy your favorite simulated beverage on the simulated house. ;)

I suspect she's quite popular with most fans, so we may see more of her acting as a GA adviser to keep the 2 republics, if they are still there, from trying to kill each other, since she's been there for ten years and should know where all the bodies are buried.

There were ~130,000 US troops in Iraq in 2006, pre-"surge". The surge consisted of ~21,000 additional troops, along with tour modifications to quickly achieve and sustain the total of ~150,000 for about a year.

Even if you only count the increase of combat troops (the surge formations were heavily combat units, since the infrastructure was mostly in-place), the surge was 5 additional Army brigades, raising the Iraq deployed brigades from 15 to 20, with a proportional increase in deployed Marines (the surge numbers included about 4000 additional Marines as part of the 21,000 total.) That is ~33% increase in combat troops, or 15% increase in total troops - not a 400% increase.

So the pre-surge ratio of troops to populace was ~385:1, and the surge ratio was ~333:1.

Of course, the truth is that the term "The Surge" was a misleading simple shorthand for a major change of operational direction, of which the ratio of troops (or even combat troops) to populace was only a fractional part. The real effect of the additional troops was that it gave commanders sufficient troop commitment flexibility (in some sense, "reserves") to continue to provide essential security by US forces while increasing training cadre working with the re-forming Iraqi security forces.

A different political situation might call for wildly different troop concentrations, either more or less.

Well, that's a little belated. Paladin has been a member for almost 2 years now.
