One thing I find curious is that we haven't heard anything about the man who put the scar on Merlin's cheek. Consider the man on the street. He would know that Merlin is the most dangerous bodyguard on all of Safehold. He would know that Merlin is a seijin. He may even know that Merlin trains other bodyguards, and is never touched unless he allows it. It stands to reason that the man who could scar Merlin would have to be very good with a weapon, notwithstanding the period of time before Merlin learned to fight with a sword. It seems to me that many people would be curious to find out who could do that. Someone who could do that would find it almost irresistible to keep from bragging about it. The fact that no one does leads one to suspect that Merlin went on to kill him.
What do you think people in Charis say about the scar? ~Tonto |

And for some reason I came to think of "accidentally brutally cut his head off while combing his hair"...

In Charis probably not much. Perhaps Merlin was inattentive as a novice. In Corisande, however, they would say Merlin must have ticked off Nimue Chwaeriau something fierce. Seijin Nimue is demonstrably faster than seijin Merlin, no? Siddermarkians might suggest seijin Ahbraim managed the feat. In Zion especially within the Iquisition one might assume the demon Dialydd Mab just missed rising up the ranks of hell by eliminating his competition. I am sure the stories abound. Especially after the Mab letter to his Corpulent Putrescence, L'Inquisitore Più Grasso. |

Who could have put the scar on Merlin's cheek? Who could be so good?
Who else but Merlin's instructor. --------------------------------------------

That's what I was thinking. It was from a training accident. If it's an old scar, then maybe it dates back to when he was being trained. If you are going to play with sharp objects, then don't be surprised when you get cut because it will happen eventually. When using dangerous objects, a moment's inattention can have far more disastrous results than a small scar. |

Hi Guys In OAR, when Nimue was re-configuring her PICA as a male seijin, she included a facial scar because she imagined that no warrior with a seijin's capabilities could possibly have got through all his adventures without acquiring a few scars. R . ..//* *\\

We know that but the question implied "How do Safeholdians think Merlin got the scar".

If anyone asks him, I'd love to hear Merlin reply "You should see the other guy"

Scars are reminders of doing something not so bright but being lucky enough to survive it.
