I'm reading LAMA, and I'm on page 574. Ahlverez is thinking to himself about the supply situation. During his musings, he states

two of theose damnable armored ships had arrived in Silkiah Bay.

Looking at the maps in LAMA, Silkiah Bay is at the far eastern end of the Gulf of Dohlar. Getting ships there would be quite an accomplishment, especially with the work Earl Thirsk has done with the Dohlar Navy.

Did I miss something earlier or is this a typo.

I'm not sure what maps you're looking at, the only bay I see off of the Gulf of Dohlar is Salthar Bay. Silkiah Bay is right of the Gulf of Mathyas, right outside Silk Oten.

Found it!!!

On this map from By Schism Rent Asunder, Silkiah Bay is on the far east end of the Gulf of Dohlar.

In Midst Toil and Tribulation, that area is labeled Salthar Bay and Silkiah Bay is of the Gulf of Mathyas.

Looks like a mistake by a clerk in the Order of Hastings office. (Plus my eyes couldn't quite read the fine print on the map in LAMA  )

The printed version (C)2010 is the one I'd go with; that shows Silkiak Bay on the east side of the isthmus below silktown with Salthar bay (and the duky of Salthar to the west of Silkiah.

We all believe at somepoint charis will gain control or influence over the canal that divides Howard and haven. There is a question of which canal. The current canal is said to going to need extensive expansion for optimal use. Charis could also great a newer and shorter canal at the thinest part of the land bridge, either direct or via the lake shown on the map. I always had an idea that if they got the orbital weaponry, they could some how use it to create a new water way there.
While costlyy, a shorter canal would be easier to secure, and its positioning means charis can use long term control off that gulf to its advantage. It would be purpose built tot their requirements.

The terrain would not support it apparently. (otherwise Shan-Wei would have done so, probably.)
You have to remember the main canal system, which is mostly in Siddarmark and the border states, with some spurs in the Temple Lands, was laid out by Shan-Wei, yes it has been added to, the New Northland is an example, apparently, and probably some canals were left to be finished by the colonists, but the point remains, the original canals are cavalier about going through individual mountains, but there was the requirement that the system could be maintained and that there be enough water.

Hi SYED,

Yup, from the later maps, the 252 mile gap [RFC pearl] or isthmus between Haven and Howard is quite mountainous; and while almost on the equator with lots of rainstorms, providing enough water for all the locks was too much even for Shan-Wei's terraformers, so I doubt Charis even with dynamite can do it.

OTOH, using the North Watch mountain range despite its near north-south orientation for the defensive border of Silkiah and the alliance drastically reduces the troops required because there are only 5-6 passes through them, besides narrow coastal areas at each end, so the actual total line needed to be defended could be just 10% of that or around 25 miles, quite cheap for Silkiah as just one lure the alliance can use to woo her.

But the shorter canal is a nonstarter according to a RFC pearl 2-3 years back, IIRC.

Taking both sets of locks on the Silkiah canal will be tough, but the easiest means could be from due south on the Gulf of Jahras, possibly raiding cavalry remount depots being cover for scout-snipers taking 3-4 horses each to travel AFAP, covering the ~200+ miles before they're recognised.

Desperate for more RFC,

L

Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

DO we know if the angels used explosives themselves when they made canals, or simply used man power? We know that the harchong originally got gunpowder allowed due a wish to one day create their own canal system, which would have needed explosives to be created. So could they blast a canal through the mountains?

I got the impression that the canals created by the Archangels were created before the colonists woke.

IE the canals were in place (as far as mortals knew) on the Day of Creation.

Of course, the Archangels weren't bound by the Proscriptions so they could use methods that mere mortals could not.

However, I suspect that even using Federation Technology, it would be difficult to build working canals through some areas of Safehold.

IE the comment about water supply made earlier was correct.
