Even better:
They get back into space and can't find the Gbaba, until they finally hear one lonely Gbaba ship wailing an eery automated call over a ruined planet. The Gbaba caught a cold from Humans that wiped them out.

Shame on you for stealing from a dead guy (H.G. Wells).

The really interesting thing about Clyntahn to me is that RFC posted that even he wouldn't be willing to approve electricity.

The Office of the Grand Inquisitor may have more detailed information about what will set off the OBS and Clynton doesn't strike me as a 'martyr' type. This may be partially why he's vetting what info he's passing on. The other reason being he's a control freak of the first order. Also, he wants to discourage innovation and only allow those inventions he's looked over and approved. In MHO if the Church won, all those innovators like Brother Lynkyn would be dead shortly after if Clynton were still in charge.

From what David Weber said, using electricity (for most anybody on Safehold) would be "stealing from Langhorne".

Clyntahn doesn't need to know about the OBS and what would set it off.

He just knows that playing around with electricity is strictly forbidden.

Oh David Weber has stated that people in the past on Safehold have "played around with electricity" and the Inquisition has reacted harshly when they found out about it.

Check out "Why can't Charis have electricity?" here: http://www.davidweber.net/faqs/index/series:6

True.

It just surprised me because it suggests Clyntahn actually would give importance to a rule external to himself, whereas I had previously thought he had essentially entirely convinced himself that "his will = God's will".

Why would it suggest that?

His will is God's will. That's why since his agents have found the plans for the steam engine, he is confident that he can apply it safely in accordance with God's will. Brother Fultyn's innovations did not originate from Clyntahn and so might not be used in a manner pleasing to God.

The bottom line for Clyntahn is that innovations that go through him or his sources are sure to acceptible to God since His and Clyntahn's minds are so sympatico.

Hi, long time lurker emerging from the shadows... the light is blinding!

So my initial reaction when Rayno gave Clyntahn the information about the steam engine was "oh no! Now the Church is going to copy it!", but.... what if that's too obvious? What if Clyntahn sees this as proof positive that Charis has finally clearly and obviously violated the Proscriptions? Maybe his interest is not in copying, but something more sinister? I have no idea what, but it's fun to speculate!
