The inquisition has been holding on to the hope that after the war, the new idea can be burned away and removed by killing the few that know. But if the knowledge is spread everywhere, the genie bottle has forever been smashed.

For starters they can't be that obviously self-destructive from their own perspective. People in Siddermark and in Charis know how much the new innovations have helped ensure their survival to date so handing weapons to the enemy would be suicidal. While getting those innovations spread as broadly as possible is Merlin's (and now Nimue's) ultimate goal in order the generate an unstoppable scientific revolution, they can't just hand that knowledge over if they want people to think scientifically about the natural world.
Indeed. They don't want to just spread innovations, they want to encourage innovators.

So why not spread the church innovations or technologies that failed to get church permission due to corruption? Those things are items they want forgot or controled but if disseminated, they would eventually see them spread. be best to blame the leak on the inquisition.

So I'm going to play devil's advocate here....

What if we have Clyntahn figured completely wrong?

What if Clyntahn knows about the orbital bombardment system, and is doing his best to keep things as they are to avoid setting it off? What if he knows what's sleeping under the Temple and is trying desperately to make sure that when the thing under the Temple wakes up, it doesn't simply decide to lay waste to Safehold?

Discuss....

With the amount of times that we have seen Clyntahn fly into a rage, he is more likely bi-polar than someone with an agenda.

Sounds like Thirsk needs a middle of the night visit from Merlin or one of his alter ego's.

Let him know that Charis can get him and his family out if he wants to take that path.

He can also be warned that Charis knows about his screw galleys and they won't have a chance stopping the next Charisian armada. He doesn't need a specs sheet on the King Harold's. He just needs to be reassured he is going to get trounced even worse then off Armagedan Reef.

David Weber's comments about Clyntahn would IMO work against River Monster's idea.

Whatever is under the Temple, we can be quite certain that it won't "simply decide to lay waste to Safehold."

The entire purpose of Safehold was to save a remnant of humanity. It would be rather silly to save humanity by destroying everyone. And if some maniac had decided to wipe out the planet, they would have done so 800 years ago rather than leave it sleeping all this time.

Even if the secret under the Temple activates the Rakurai, it would destroy the planet. It might destroy Charis--and that happens to be exactly what Clyntahn wants. Besides, Clyntahn could not imagine that the desires of God and the Archangels could possibly be any different than his own desires.

So Clyntahn is definitely not trying to keep the secret under the Temple asleep for fear of what it might do.

I'll raise it one more for you. What if clyntahn knows *everything*? He knows about earth, the G'baba, the religion, everything.

I think it is a much more probably scenario. Yeah, this religion is a damn lie. It is false. There are NO archangels, the commandments are a lie. But the G'baba are out there and will come and kill us if we use technoly above the prescriptions.

What would you do if you were an evil megalomaniac sadic politian?

I think it would gel pretty much with clyntahn's ethos. Use and abuse your position as much as you want, while amassing as much power as you can, and use any means you like to achieve more power and crush you oposition. With one exception: keep the proscriptions intact. After all, if you don't, the G'baba may come and kill you.

That made me think of something. What if they get back out into space and found out that someone else wiped out the Gbaba in the last 1000 years. ;)

Even better:
They get back into space and can't find the Gbaba, until they finally hear one lonely Gbaba ship wailing an eery automated call over a ruined planet. The Gbaba caught a cold from Humans that wiped them out.
