I believe she already is doing that.

I think her background is due for deeper investigation and exposition than has presently been done in the books so far.
I think her character is going to be a little put out too when she finds out a few significant details about Merlin's sexual orientation (i.e. that Merlin would prefer to be in bed with Caleb)and why, given her past use of sexual leverage (and possibly blackmail?).

Well in OAR that was the case, but by six or seven years later, Merlin's sexual orientation may have gotten rewired

Hi Undercover Fa Kid,

Give Friday a break, she was in love with her boss and deservedly so.

I'm amazed this keeps coming up when RAH emphasized strong women throughout his stories including the unpublished "We the Living" with the general exception of the juveniles which had to get past the psycho witch at Simon & Shuster, so older women were easily permitted to show their brains, though the women of the people in Citizen of the Galaxy were pretty impressive .

"Puppet Masters" which came out in 1951 had "Mary Allucquere"; "If this goes on-" from 1940 had "Sister Maggie", while Gulf had Gail; all smarter, tougher, and more capable than their spouses, as they themselves admitted which was rather rare back then.

The starship captains in Starship Troopers were repeatedly recognised as smarter and tougher than the hero Juan Rico, and who wants to mess with Gwen Novak aka Hazel Stone in any of her books?

Rehearsing all of the dean's heroines would take too long, but Wyo, Hilda and Maureen would hurt me if they weren't recognised as well.

Have Spacesuit Will Travel, Kip's mom is a math genius in her own right, but you never see it. It's probably only mentioned to explain why Kip is so smart. Good genes, you know. Same book, Peewee steals an alien ship and engineers an escape from their prison off stage, but as soon as she's with Kip, she gets docked most of her IQ and surrenders all of her initiative, until she's separated from him, at which time her IQ and initiative return in time to save him.

Agent Friday was slavishly devoted to and absolutely dependent upon the boss, etc etc.

I'm not saying you can't see a solid example of female characters doing something worthwhile in a Heinlein book, its just not on a level with Robert Jordan, where the two most powerful individuals outside the Car'a'carn himself and his two lackeys (with all due respect to Masters Cauthon and Aybarra) are women, or RFK where Death outscources the jobs that absolutely positively must be done to a certain one armed, 'cat wielding cyclone of doom.

I would consider this unlikely as I doubt Merlin would have the capability or reason to change this having been living the life of a warrior monk (nun??). Merlin still considers himself as Nimue's avatar and unless a pressing reason to change appears, and lacking any hormonal drive otherwise, I can't see a driver to change.

Hi Airtech,

I think you're worrying too much; we've had no indication Merlin fancies Cayleb since he got married, and he's been fascinated by Nynian since he met her.

I'm counting on the fact Aivah's the most beautiful woman Merlin has ever seen, she knows Ahbraim is quite male, quite good at sex including satisfying his pardner from Silkiah in Zion, nor has anyone ever refused her apparently.

Even if things were as you posted, Merlin must perform as she expects Ahbraim would, NTM to make the cover story work.

OTOH, I don't think we'll ever see Merlin and Nimue have sex, as 'therapy' for Merlin or just to illustrate how PICA's are so great at it given RFC's religiosity, NTM the storyline etc [its the last thing by several country miles, IMO], though General Gahrvai may be her first conquest if I'm reading things right.

I try not to forget that fiction (science fiction) or otherwise is influenced by the values (and technological dreams) of the time in which it was written. So good writing transcends the time gap, explaining why Suetonius is read more often that Tacitus.

I always felt that Nyian was attractive to Merlin due to the depth of commitment to fight the corruption in the COGA.

I too think Christmas would be good time for a new book to read.
