But doesn't OWL see both Nimue and Merlin as it's commanding officer? After all they are the same person, just in different PICA's.

IMO Old Owl would have a problem deciding which one of them ranked the other but the New Owl could likely see Merlin as the "senior" of the two.

It should be interesting how this plays out. As I understand it,the senior of the same rank is by date of Rank and as they both have the same date. It's not how long you've been in that Rank. Should be Interesting....

Nimue is as original as Merlin.

Emergency uploading.

We know from Narmahn's experience that it is possible to re-programme nanites to upload people's memories and personality, allowing them to live on (so to speak) as an electronic version of themselves, although doing so causes the original body to die.

Thoughts?

I think that you misunderstood what happened there.

And as far as Nimue "locking Merlin away"...just remember that it's Merlin, the original, who is OWL's commanding officer. Not that I wouldn't like to see RFC wriggle out of that one.

Really? You mean that nanites weren't used and that Narmahn's personality wasn't uploaded and re-integrated?

Then what in blazes have I been reading?

Well, currently in RL earlier date of rank and longer time in that rank are normally the same thing. I'm pretty sure that a navy that routinely encounters both relativistic velocities and 'coldsleep' will have worked out a somewhat more sophisticated understanding of seniority, if, indeed, they still use it. In so far as it is rational, seniority is probably designed to reflect experience at that command level, however roughly. By that criterion, Merlin has several years more experience than Nimue and so is clearly her senior.

I think AClone meant that you left out the "head set". ;)

Of course, what happened with Nahrmahn was an "over-riding" of the standard programming of the medical-nanites and we know that the process didn't work as well as it could.

Electronic Nahrmahn isn't "complete" so he couldn't be downloaded to a PICA.

It may be possible to develop special nanites that would copy a person's memories for later up-loading but David Weber hasn't given us enough info to know for sure. :)

However, Nimue has the direct interlink to VR, can experience months in a few seconds, and therefore perhaps has actually been around longer when this timeshift is taken into account.

Also, OWL is autonomous and will agree with his friend Nahrman.

Oh, right.
Sorry, I just kinda assumed that everyone would know that the headset (or a specialised version thereof) would be used during the uploading bit.
(shrug)
Mea culpa.

AClone, please remember to explain why someone might be wrong next time. It leaves you less open to salvoes of sarcasm.

On that, can anyone remember if RFC has stated whether nanites can be customised, or if Merlin/OWL/Nimue is using off the shelf nanites?

Just curious.....
