I wonder if Nimue and Merlin will not agree on everything ? I sense that there might be some friction between them down the road

Don't know about "friction" but over time they will have "different ideas" about actions to take.
Even now, they have "different points of view". Remember, Merlin has had several years on Safehold that Nimue hasn't had.

[/quote Hi Drak you are so right. Of course Merlin didn't giveNimue all his memories which is probably good considering what he has had to do. .I just love the characters of Nimue and Merlin. I am fascinated with the technology involved in creating them. Guess I'm a geek wannabe Lol |

Given the names, when will they have the serious disagreement leading to Nimue sealing Merlin in his wizard's cave or the like, for a thousand years or until he is needed again, like Friedrich Barbarossa?
Or, after a thousand years of VR, Nimue the Taller has recovered her sanity? Perhaps the hints of future to come are simply too obvious? Or perhaps Nimue will simply say he has returned to the Mountains of Light to meditate? |

I agree. Given Merlin experience of the past 7 years which Nimue has only a vague clue. Should be interesting to see what comes about between the two now.

Merlin may be simulated flesh & Blood but still harbors and emotional human entity inside. That Person has made most of the transition from Female to Male. She/He has been alone for a long time but now has a sister - does anybody think Merlin can develop a relationship with another entity perhaps flesh & blood or is Merlin a machine bound to a quest and stripped of the human soul? Nimue has just been given a new life with an extended family of sorts. Nimue and Merlin have a familial relationship and are different individuals with an incredible and similar background. I am not young enough to know everything!

One aspect of Nimue is that before her, Merlin could "look forward" to out-living all of his Safehold friends.
Even electronic Nahrmahn may not out-live Ohlyvya. So without Nimue, Merlin's only "permanent" companion would be Owl and while Owl has "grown up" IMO it wouldn't be the same as a human friend/companion. While we don't know how long it'll be before Merlin's task is done, it would likely be longer than any of Merlin's Safehold friends will live. Sure Merlin could make new friends but they'll die and he would still have to go on. After several generations of seeing his friends die, Merlin would IMO lose much of his humanity. Nimue could aid in preserving Merlin's humanity.

Both Merlin and Nimue will make and loose friends. Both will have inner circles that know they are machines and not human as support groups too. Having in each other and possible stored virtual personalities other immortals may help coping or, hurt as they lose their humanity thinking humans as short lived 'insects', only David will decide how this goes.

An interesting thought has occurred to me.
Emergency uploading. We know from Narmahn's experience that it is possible to re-programme nanites to upload people's memories and personality, allowing them to live on (so to speak) as an electronic version of themselves, although doing so causes the original body to die. Let's take it one step further. Merlin could develop special nanites which have only a single purpose and a single use. To infiltrate the brain of the person that they are injected into and remain in a passive state, simply copying the brain's state at the time. When the person then dies, the nanites go dormant until they receive a specific signal, whereupon they upload all of their information. The uploaded personality is then re-integrated and placed into a new PICA body (since they can theoretically be built now if certain materials are found) and... TA-DAAAH! Merlin's precious people gain a second life, albeit one where they can no longer truly reproduce. ...thoughts? ~~~~~~

I think that you misunderstood what happened there. And as far as Nimue "locking Merlin away"...just remember that it's Merlin, the original, who is OWL's commanding officer. Not that I wouldn't like to see RFC wriggle out of that one. |
