Seeking guidance here in that I'm like a blind man in the world of sight regarding this topic. Why are many people so interested in the lives of strangers?
At present in Australia we are being visited by two British royals, and our news is dominated by this visit. All TV news broadcasts start with it, the newspaper headlines are concerning it, and the current affairs programs seem obsessed with her dress colours and similar trivia.
Not singling them out as the same type of attention is also provided to minor pop singers and movie actors at times, plus many of the reporters covering this royal visit are from the US so there is obvious interest there. I'm obviously missing some faculty that many in the population possess as I find anything in this vein totally uninteresting.

Hopefully, someone will come up with an answer, because I'm in the same boat you are.

I am mostly in Knick's boat.

Though a couple of quibbles. They aren't strangers. They are exceptionally visible, important people. We even had a show about that, may still, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, which I could almost understand from the envy viewpoint.

You missed the sport's stars.

Other than that I am clueless.

Though many would wonder about the need a show like Top Gear or why I used to love going to motorcycle races.

Good question, though.

Enjoy your day,

It is because they are so revered and respected. To be visited by them is considered an honor. It's not as if it happens all too frequently. The life of royals is amusing and they are not thought of as the people next door. Much of their habits interest people. What do they eat. What do they drink? Do they poop? And why are they interested in leaving stately England and traveling to Plainsville, Wherever?

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

British Attitude to the House of Windsor:

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip - Yay! :D

Prince Charles and Camilla - Bleh! :(

Prince William and Kate - Yay! :D

Best thing they could do is bypass Charlie and go straight to Wills.

Scottish attitude to the House of Windsor:

Bleh - Like the Queen, not so sure about the rest.

As for the idea of the UK becoming a Republic?

Please, no! That'll give Tony "Prince of Darkness" Blair a chance to get back into a position of political power! He's done enough damage as it is.

Mike. ;)

One possible explanation, my personal opinion only, is that people like you and I think life is for living, come h*** or high water, while those that get mired down in "reality TV" and celeb watching think life is for escaping.

We colonials in the USA usually, (not always) react favourably to Royal Visits. Maybe it just breaks from the usual politically spun normal non-news presentations?

A lot of us Americans feel our news outlets are not news, not actual information, nor not even actual dis-information. It is just political garbage. TV news shows are examples.

It also may be a case of the government slipping something nasty by us voters while we are all focused upon....Royalty? Dunno; which means I do not know. HB of CJ (old coot) :)

Royals are your future head of state with many of your citizens declaring or swearing an oath of Allegiance. Much like Empress E1 of SEM or her kids.

Betters are some when your betters come you gather to see them to wear what they wear, to get their hair cut, so while you can't do what they do, as well as they do, you can participate. Either wear their shoes, or buy their jeans for yourself so you too can be cool, two thumbs up black leather jacket, jeans etc... The Fonz...

Better at things actors singers sports being cool driving cars swimming surfing tennis smarter faster better. Or so much more swarmy and cool. Like why you are here because you like Weber books, he conveys stories so much better.

Or for your case when Miranda shows up and you go out and buy her underwear so your girl might hint at her Beauty. Comes with a free V'sS catalogue.

Thanks Lord Skimper, I think you have nailed the discrepancy.

Quite arrogant of me but I don't regard any of the so called celebrities as being better than me, so have no interest in aping them or their life styles.
I do accept that many people have better singing, acting or sporting skills than I do, and respect their ability, but have no interest in them outside of their narrow aspect of excellence.
Thus I go to see a Cate Blanchett film, listen to Springsteen's music, or read Richard Branson's tips on running a successful business; but have no interest in them personally.

I think I agree both with you and with Lord Skimper's evaluation. I asked some of the same questions when there was a royal visit to your country while I was living there. Given the way Australians serving the Crown were treated in the Bohr Wars, at Gallipoli, and in WWII when Australia was being invaded by the Japanese but the Brits kept much of the Aussie military in Africa rather than defending Australia, I could not understand the devotion to the Queen. Lots of people go crazy over people who are different - in whatever way, for either good or bad reasons.
