Do I recall correctly that the racial base for the EoC are South-East Asian Islanders? If so, then they are a mix between maylay and vietnamese/cambodian. Yes, there is a healthy mix of other races tossed in. Still the predominant race is similar to those like the Bugis who sail the South Sunda Sea today.
Also, I've always thought that Charis was based on Great Britain with Old Charis as England. Now it seems much more likely that Old Charis is more likely Wales and Corisande a conquored England. Both the goegraphy and not so subtle hints from RFC suggest this is so. Merlin's penchant for Welsh names is a case in point. On Safehold the British cultures with druidic origins defeated those with Roman origins. Taken together I wonder if RFC is intentionally playing with us. The flip of England and Wales by using the Arthurian legend is fun by itself. However, I find that making the EoC the Safehold version of the bogeyman hilarious. Our esteemed author transplanted the Bugis into the Safehold version of an improved Great Britain. So the mainlanders will be telling their children stroies of the bogeyman sailing out of the night to take wicked children. Those stories will have delightfully similar origins as those told to the children of pre-Terran Federation earth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogeyman |

I can't believe you are suggesting that RFC/MWW is having fun at our expense. I am shocked, shocked I tell you at the very idea. I am shocked even more than a certain French law enforcement official finding out that Rick's Cafe tolorated games of chance in an obscure movie. Meanwhile here at work my office has the door locked and the lights out in accordance with official guidance like good little boys. (Active shooter training exercise.) We are actively and collectively cowering under our desks, 100 plus years of combined military service and a double digit number of combat tours shared between the group notwithstanding. They only thing we have to protect ourselves with is one of my kids nerf pistols and the ammo dart is too old and will no longer function. God save us from stupid politicians that don't trust current and retire field grade officers to handle firearms responsibly. (Personal viewpoint and does not reflect DOD position.) Apologies to all for going off topic on a rant. |

Ouch, never thought about all the tropes that exists in the Safehold series, but there where a serious amount of them listed on that page. --- Jack of all trades and destructive tinkerer. Anyone who have simple solutions for complex problems is a fool. |

Hi PeterZ,
All born on Safehold now have an epicanthic fold, common among the Terran Asian races. We learned this in OAR, when Nimue morphs into Merlin, checking himself out in the palace apartment mirror, IIRC. I saw it as an amalgamation of the species after almost a thousand years of closed breeding, NTM a good thing, besides implying the majority of the 8 million 'Ark' volunteers were Asian, though the federation's human population wasn't necessarily as skewed. Unless you're referring to some further detail RFC has provided that I don't recall, the Polynesian reference may have been regarding the House of Winton's physical appearance or royal presence, not their genetic heritage. Regarding the other posts, thanks for making me smile guys. L
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

I might be inferring here, Lyonheart. Islanders are described as brown skinned and smaller than mainalnders. That implies Islanders are smaller than Harchongese in general as well as Dohlarans, Desnairan Siddermarkans and Temple Landers. Being smaller than the predominantly ethnic chinese Harchongese implies South-east asian stock.
Anyway, I got caught up in what I think is RFC's clever use of tropes in his plot development.
