Since there has been a fair amount of discussion about steam power and railroading in the forum, I though I would post this. Basically, one of the biggest, most powerful steam locomotives ever is going to undergo a complete restoration and be returned to service for special events.

As an enormous train nut I heartily approve this. I would love to see one of these run again under it's own steam. I suspect it would be some time before Charis built one of these but still awesome news.

Hmm.. So what is the accepted nickname for people who like steam engines?
People who like cars are usually called petrol-heads and I don't think steam-heads fit the bill.. I just noticed that this was my 100th post. Weee!! --- Jack of all trades and destructive tinkerer. Anyone who have simple solutions for complex problems is a fool. |

In my area, this 1949 beauty run again since 2006 : http://www.train-vapeur.fr/ only 1 741 865 km on the odometer ! Spectacular, especially when coupled with 2 other steam trains in the Gothard Swiss pass. |

Ferroequinologist or Rail Fans When my son worked for the W&LE they called rail fans "Foamers". I have pictures of that Climax going back 42 uears. A trip to Cass, WV is a reccomendation I make to anyone who likes trains, lives in the East, and wants to see a real steam engine work. The Oregon Rail Historical Society musem in Portland, OR is an interesting place right now as SP Daylight 4449 is going through an inspection. Bill |

http://nelpg.org.uk try it and see. The smallest loco is 39 (long) tons "Ready to Go" c/w 2 tons of coal and 600(Imperial) galloons of water. (The derogatory term for Steam Enthusiasts in the UK is "Anorak", the photographer types are referred to as "Festoons") |

If you want a really tough and thorough restoration the Smithsonian Air & Space museum is currently restoring a SPAD XIII with its original fabric. The plane was built in 1917. From what I have read they want to complete it for its 100th anniversary and have been at it since 1992.
