I had a Greatest Honorverse battles thread. I was watching HULK...again and that scene where he fought those mutated animals was cool. He hit one dog so hard in the face the poor mutt just exploded into blood. They were trying to tear a new ass outta the Hulk. 'Til he got real mad, because of course they kept trying to go after his girl.

Any I missed?

I try not to watch to many TV (or for that matter, movie) battles, because they usually get it wrong.

For example, Braveheart (I could name most any movie or show featuring battles from the 16th Centruy backward) usually shows masses of men charging at each other into a bunch of personal combats--which might be good if you're at a gang fight, but not so hot if you're a commander of an army--you want ORGANIZED Mayhem, not something beyond your control.

IIRC, there was a miniseries not too long ago called "Rome", where a soldier was flogged half-to-death for breaking ranks and doing just what all the 'heroes' in the movies do.

Militaries are disciplined--that's why Rome beat the barbarians for centuries.

As for more modern (19th/20th century), "Gettysburg" (the movie) did a fairly decent job of depicting 1860-time battle (not enough obscuring smoke, however) and I recommend "A Bridge To Far" for pretty realistic WWII battle scenes.

And if your interest is mano-a-mano, then the climatic fight between Swartzenegger and his opponent in "Commando" is way over the top but lots of fun in a testosterone-sort-of-way (of course, you first have to get past all the rest of the ridiculousness first...

IMHO as always...YMMV.

It is one of my favorite series

so the Battle of Antarctica from Stargate i right at the top of my list

and there are some anime shows that have truly awesome space battles (SDF Macross. Crest/Banner of the Stars, Nadesico etc)

When Leonidas' 300 went out to meet Xerxes army at Thermopylae. Totally enjoyed it.

At least two-thirds of the space battles from Babylon 5.
The Liberation of Earth is a classic.

What spoiled that for me was that the historic battle at least to the source I know was so much more awe-inspiring than the one in the 300 movie.

I was like 'what the hell? How did the filmmakers manage to lose 2/3rds of the awesomeness of one of mankind's most famous battles?'

Agreed, especially since I just watched that episode last night.
