Well, once the OBS is out of the way, the women are going to go crazy for mauve, and all the other interesting colours you get out of petrochemicals, NTM the guys all want a car, everybody wants gas, then electrical lighting and central heating, all the music fans love their radio's. Did I say hoovers, refrigerators and washing machines? The farmers will be queuing up to buy better fertilisers and farm machinery. The royal college is going to be cloned everywhere for the bright kids. And can anyone hear the Kerching of a cash register somewhere in all this? But clearly research is just going to die off completely when the war ends.

Do you queue up in Scotland? Just teasing... Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Actually, pokermind, from what I've read of ancient (i.e. pre-Christian) religions, this was not always true. It appears that religions became more exclusive and less tolerant of others as they became more monotheistic. Further, it appears that ancient polytheistic religions were tolerant of each other because they seemed to believe that, for example, my sun god and your sun god were probably the same sun god, just that we each knew them by different names. But it further appears that with the introduction of monotheistic religion, exclusivity and the "my way or the highway" attitude (i.e. my god is the only path to salvation) became increasingly prevalent, sadly. IIRC, some current eastern religions are less exclusive, believing that there are many paths to salvation (or whatever) and that their faith is but one of those paths. |

Oh I won't be surprised if Merlin and Nimue quietly give Charis's rivals a few hints. And perhaps since Nimue is a Corisande bodyguard- she may become for them what Merlin became for Charis. |

Hi guys When it comes to religion, it seems we often forget the parts we do not like. Too bad it is often forgotten that "In my Father's house there are many mansions" And in my experience, each mansion has its own path to the front door . . . Oh well, none of us are perfect R . ..//* *\\

The imperium will build its infrastructure and industry so it will be the most advanced nation on safehold, so it literally stande on the precpts. Ready at a moments notice to race ahead if they can safely push pass the restrictions. THey will have steam engines, and posibly a train systems, but due to their naval heritage, there will be extensive canal and water ways accross all the islands. THe empire will also expand to include various islands in strategic naval positions, so allow them control and power accross all the seas of safehold. Not nation would have the fleet now or any time soon that could make them retreat.
While the empire is dooing this, the other nations will be dealing with the loss of power and influence in the church. THe republic will be strong, they likely will get a good deal with the empire, as an expansive republic would remain a threat to the temple lands keeping them occupied. THey would be sold plenty of weaponry, and plenty of mining and farming gear to help ensure they can pay via raw materials They can easily secure and bottleneck any advancement from the south by any force from Howard. They would expand via the canal system. THeir alliance with charis will mean that their coasts are kept safe by their ships if needed. THe rest of the world will need to deal that the imperium makes the best goods, and far cheaper than nearly anyything locally, even if they dont officially trade with them, i guarantee they will end up with expansive smuggling issues. I can see many of the down trodden attempt to escape to imperial lands. I can see the imperium making a policy that if you volenteer for service in their forces/navy, you would be awarded citizenryship. Merlin will use the change in the world, they will start to undermine any system that is in the way of building a better world. either supplying arms, sabotage, infiltration. THe imperium will act in a way to ensure it s dominace on the oceans, and allow them to advance. the fact that the coming changes will ruin their enemies is just great. Harchong only keeps the slave in line due to the fact that the church helped to keep the staus quo, if the church stumbles their own power base will be shaken. |

I wouldn't be surprised if research keeps going for a while after the war ends, but shifts toward applying stuff they developed during for the war to civilian use. I'm sure there's been some of that going on in the background, but with their resource limitations, it probably hasn't kept up with the improvements in manufacturing and military technologies.
