I've been looking at real-world wars to try and notice any similarities with safehold. For example, in the starfire series the Bug base at rabaul is a pretty clear comparison. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone could recommend any books about the pacific campaign of WWII for me.

Thanks for the help

Guadalcanal is the book that sparked my interest in the Pacific campaign. The author is Richard B. Frank. Its claim was to be the first book written based both on the American records, and the recently released Japanese records of the war.

If you´re really interested (or just a gamer) you could try and find a copy of the game "Flat top", allowing you a chance to realise just how tricky the Pacific naval warfare could be.

Carrier warfare is a very interesting tactical challenge. The more realism that is added, the harder it gets to effectively find and strike at the enemy.

The cited Morrison work was the most complete, but is basically written by the USN and its instructors. Only those insights into the Japanese actions that remained in files captured shortly after the war are included. The Victory at Sea presentations are excellent propaganda stories of the Allies - particularly the US. They are fun to watch and provide a lot of useful information, but again they are NOT outside observer info and tell only one side of the story.

Japanese Destroyer Captain: Tamechei Hara. Written in the mid-50's covering nearly the entire pacific campaign from the Japanese viewpoint. Very well-written book. Kind of hard to find, but well worth it.

A one volume summary is the "Pacific War 1941-1945" by Costello.

Fading Victory, The Diary of Admiral Matome Ugaki 1941 - 1945, edited by Goldstien and Dillon. ISBN 9781591143246

There is also an english translation of the planning documents for the attack on Pearl Harbor, but I have not been able to find it on my bookshelves since we moved some bookcases around...

You could go with dozens of books on specific battles and campaigns.

My choices for certain battles are

Battle of Midway
Shattered Sword by Parshell and Tully

Guadalcanal campaign

Guadalcanal by Richard B Frank
Starvation Island by Eric Hammel
Neptune's Inferno by James Hornfischer

Battle of Leyte Gulf

Battle of Surigao Strait by Tony Tully
Last Stand of the Tin-can Sailor by James Hornfischer

Battle of the Philipian Sea
Class of the Carriers by Barret Tillman
