I might be off one or two in my count, but there were somewhere between half a dozen and a dozen before you and I joined the forum. (Yes, I did go back and read some of them. What can I say. I was unemployed, doing nothing but job hunting and it was something to keep my mind occupied. And there were only 60 pages worth of topics, then.) There have been 5 or 6 since then. I don't remember all the topics, but this is the third time this particular one has been brought up in the last year. (I think. It might be 4.)

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."

Now giving the ships away with the expectation of scrapping them could be a worthwhile enterprise. I imagine there are certain systems on those ships that could be worth salvaging on some of the poorer worlds in places like the Talbott quadrant. IE Nuncio might like to have a few fusion reactors or sensor suites something. The SLN stuff was not poorly made, its just obsolete as military hardware goes. It may not be worth the time and cost of a Manticorian salvage crew to take apart but a much more poorly paid Nuncion crew could be gainfully entertained and employed looting the things.

Hmm, that's actually a good idea. There is a lot of stuff in those ships that can used in the civilian sector.

If Manticore advertised that they where going to scrap those ships and they now where accepting tenders for the contract of scrapping them they could make a little profit from it.

I would also like to point out that you should never underestimate how much profit a scrapdealer can make on stuff you consider to be worthless. :)

I still say; send them off with skeleton crews (borrowed from some of the recalled ex-soly rout merchies) to Haven. Install minor refits (2nd hand used Manty ECM/EW, Alfa nodes as available, & missile tubes as needed {they still have a bundle of Soly missiles to suffice for a while} along with any crew reduction automation they can round up) give them whatever crew that can be scrapped up (retired Navy/merchies, newbies in training, Haven crews etc.). & send them to putter around the Talbot cluster (1 fully crewed ship per squadron with 3-5 skeleton crewed ships (without automation upgrades if needed)). Sure they can’t fight off a Soly battle fleet but they don’t have too, that’s what the actual defenses are for. They certainly would scare off any FF-BC raids & may make BF think twice about going there. As I said before – they don’t have to be able to out-fight a Manty Pod-nought, just give the appearance of being able to slaughter a FF BC assault force. Then as new construction comes on line they can be retired & scraped – non-upgraded/skeleton crewed units first, with upgraded/fully crewed units last. This could save the GA a whole lot of pod ammo, through “fleet in being” tactics, that could be used elsewhere. Yes a system defense pod network could fend off 1 assault but then it has to be replenished. The appearance of being able to slaughter what ever is coming at it can be used almost indefinably & the Solys know what a Nevada can do to their BCs without Manty upgrades!

By all means, throw scores of SDs into Haven's yards and completely screw up Haven's maintenance and refit queue. I am sure they will get right on that.

RFC has spoken, so there is no point speculating otherwise.

I still think that they are best used as planetary impactors.

I agree, that may be the most workable idea yet. Of course, you do want to account for things like missiles and grazers (I wonder if lasers/grazers can be used for mining purposes?), but even just broken down to their consitutent elements, they may provide a cheap and ready source of material to the Talbott (and for that matter, Silesia or some of the smaller, weaker Havenite worlds).

Interesting.
