I was reading A Call to Duty and realized what system or people could do with remnants of the destroyed and captured Solly fleets. The Grand Alliance could give the fleet to Torch, Marsh, and other systems in the Verge. Most of the systems do not have the ability to update these ships but some do. The trick is to find and convince the systems that it would be a good idea to update these ships. My reasoning is thus: to refurbish ships it takes almost the same equipment to build these ships. Once a system starts successfully refurbish warships, they can start building new ships. Granted, alot of new industry would be required to build new ships because many items would have to be manufactured from scratch rather than bought.
Ultimately, these type of mobile fleet giveaways could be helpful to build verge and shell space industries. |

Torch would have to decommission their entire fleet to run ONE of these monstrosities. It's not so absurd with a planet that has a population of billions, but Torch is tiny.

Can't the GA use them for live-fire sims?
Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

lol! not saying it's not a good use for training gunnery teams but I believe breaking them down and using the refined metals from the ships would be better than simply scattering bits and pieces of it all over a training area. |

Not only can no Verge systems refurbish these superdreadnoughts, they can't equip, maintain, or man them either. A superdreadnought is overkill for almost any Verge system, unless they are planning a war.

Indeed--one post is all it will get from me, KNick. smr, let's take the best prepared options, Marsh (who has had a number of years as a SEM base and time to improve their navy) and Rembrandt of the Talbot sector (most developed and with their own SDF). Why would they want a ship that (1) Requires 6,000 personnel, which will probably adversly impact their readiness of the rest of their fleet (2) Is obsolete against any 'modern' waller (and any SEM/RH ship larger than a CA (3) Without support or maintenance capabilities and (4) With excessive costs for modifying and improving the on-board systems. And sytems like Nuncio or Dresden that are poorer and have much smaller cadres of trained personnel--talk about white elephants.... No, like kzt says, people have been trying for years to find some practical use for the SD's, and so far no one (including yours truly) have managed to do better than "temporary POW quarters with weapons and nodes disabled." Still, someone may come up with an idea we've never heard--but that's not the way to bet... IMHO as always. YMMV. Last edited by Hutch on Tue Apr 01, 2014 8:23 am, edited 2 times in total.

About 50 SDs capturedat Spindle + ~250 SDs captured at Manticore = 300 SDs. At <7 million tons per SD that is about 2 billion tons of Chocolate. The woman of the GA will be very happy, maybe even happy enough to make their men happy. |
