Truthfully I'd expect that Grayson would have figured out a solution to the issue of protecting daughters and wives, since there are fairly obvious issues that can arise with young men and women in close proximity that the Keys at least would seem inclined to take steps to avoid. It's all well and good to depend of professionalism, but Grayson has been kind of extremist on a few of these kind of details.

Up until Abigail, there were no armsmen assigned to the daughters. They had chaperones, instead. They were protected as part of the general duties of the Guard of which ever Steading. It was not until Benjamin got the laws regarding inheritance changed that daughters were considered important enough to warrant personal armsmen. Until then, it was the job of the chaperones to keep a lid on things.

That fact always puzzled me. During the Maccabeus coup it seemed an important target, at least a secondary target, to be Benjamin's wives, as hostages. It's like our First Lady not having any protection, or the First Daughters.

It just didn't fit well into the Grayson notion of chivalry, of protecting the women

Why do you think that the women were a target? I don't think they were a target, they were just collateral damage, and would have been killed. Remember, these were Maccabeans, adherents of the same policy on women as the Masadans.

I would imagine that any time a member of a Steadholder's family left home, they had a protection detail. They just did not have an armsman on the model of Andrew LaFollet or Mateo Guttierez assigned. After all, any Steadholder's Guard is limited in size by law. Assigning Mateo to Abigail effectively cut the size of the Owens Steadholder's Own to 49, unless he is on Grayson.

I would also like to point out that it is highly unlikely that aristocratic wives or daughters went anywhere without their father/husband/brother, and certainly not off Grayson - they wouldn't need a personal armsman the way a man, who would often go places independently, would. They'd simply be assigned a protection detail from the regular Steadholder's Guard, because the Steadholder's/heir's personal armsmen would be travelling with them anyway.

I think I probably am projecting too much Earth habits onto Grayson habits. I am thinking that everyone has their own duties and if everyone is out on a given day, that would spread the Steadholders guard pretty thin, with the two wives, eight children and Benjamin himself. And the ever present duty of guarding the Palace.

How old is Honor Mayhew? Honor's goddaughter? Is she approaching debutante age?

Does anyone beside me think it likely that RFC will ensure the Honor Harrington name with a girl born unto Honor and Hamish named Honor?

Honor Mayhew is fourteen, so no debutante parties for her for at least the next couple of years. And unfortunately for you, the older Mayhew girls (Rachel, Jeanette, and Theresa) are all between eighteen and twenty. Apparently Cat and Elaine wanted to get three girls born within two years of each other out of the nursery before they had more babies.

As to your latter question - I doubt it. Honor Harrington does not seem the sort to name her daughter after herself - she's too self-effacing for that. That said, I wouldn't be at all surprised if there's been a boom of little girls named Honor over the last couple of decades - or at least since she came back from Cerberus - and I suspect it'll pop up among her close friends, either as a first name or as a middle name.

No, my suspect for her next daughter's name (assuming she has one) is Michelle. The only reason I can think of that her best friend's name wasn't used as one of Katherine Alexander-Harrington's middle names is because she's saving it to use as a first name on a future child. After all, Michelle Henke is her best friend. (I'm banking on "Michelle Elizabeth Eloise Alexander-Harrington", if you must know. )

Not so fast Miss Rose. At fourteen she could be asked to the Senior Prom next year, since she'll be in high school, and if she's accomplished and skipped a few grades, as is my niece, she could be asked this year.

And as far as Honor being too self-defacing to name a daughter after herself, Emily isn't, and Emily's card will always trump Honor's, or Hamish's in that relationship!

This is why I'm a senior Cupist he thinks to himself. :D

Did you think I got this advanced Cupist rank by patronage? I'll have you know I worked hard to achieve Senior Cupist. Those days I got caught soliciting several of my charges, I got over them.

Except for Abigail, still trying to get under her.
Well it's not my fault, Grayson gals are my weakness and it's high time a few fringe benefits come my way.

Rachel, Theresa and Jeanette are all eighteen and twenty?

What exactly are the three of them doing? Any Navy plans?

Rachel's in her third (I think?) year at Saganami Island. Theresa was always the quieter sort, so I doubt she'll be going in, and I think we'd have heard if Jeanette was. So far I think Rachel's the only Mayhew girl with any military ambitions. (I recall hearing that Abigail Hearns is a particular hero of hers!)

Hopefully we'll check in with the Graysons in the next couple of books - we haven't really gotten to spend a great deal of time with them since Echoes of Honor. (Not that I'm complaining too much, since it meant lots more screentime for Haven, but I'd like to go visit them again for awhile!)
