I think he meant that with all the various armsmen for all the various debutantes, the total number in the ballroom would be a thousand. :D

In the immortal one-liner of the incomparable Joan Rivers...
Can we talk? Can we talk?

This represents the problem with some of the posters in the threads. They are so hell bent on adhering to the letter-of-technicality that they miss the forest for the trees.

It's as if Honor once caught them dead to rights without having that course precomputed and laid in and swore...in the spirit of the immortal Scarlet...
As God is my witness I will never be caught nontechnical again!

Of course that is what I meant rose. Did it really need explaining??? I don't get it. It's as if some people read posts with an accompanying Honorverse Technical Bible.

In an earlier post I quoted Khan's final words as emphasis to how I felt towards the Honorable Delegates. Khan's words were so appropos. It is how Ricardo Montalban spoke those words (and the issues surrounding why he spoke them) that stand out.

A poster chimed in with 'Khan was quoting Ahab.'

Posters...can we close the Honorverse Bibles and the scrabble dictionaries until...we need tac-witches?...

...so that...

We can talk! We can talk!?!

Cthia, I will admit that many people (myself high on the list :? ) will easily get into technicalities. However, it looks to me like kzt simply misunderstood what you meant. It was an easy mistake to make. One reason discussions of technicalities happen so frequently is because people will quite often misunderstand what you mean if you use vague phrasing or don't explain things in detail. Now, casual discussions without the technical details are perfectly fine here on the forums. I even encourage you to continue it. But unfortunately, when there are thousands of other people involved in the discussion, you have to accept that at least some people will misunderstand you, even if you think you were being perfectly clear. :( It's the nature of the medium.

Thanks for the post SWM and I agree with that assessment. I wasn't bashing kzt, I was simply stating that the problem comes from the fact that some people seem to, IMHO, read posts with one eye closed and one Honorverse Technical Bible open. And that that practice is the cause of the misunderstandings.

Sometimes I get the impression that that bible is worn in a holster on the side hip...and some are faster than Johnny Ringo off the draw!

Perhaps I assumed too much IQ that the connection would be obvious.

In my area of work, I have to give the results of lab tests and make recommendations. It reads like a bunch of techno mumbo jumbo. I don't wish to have to do that here...in a relaxing Cupid thread?

The Cupid like threads were created specifically for a more laid back environment, for people that do not have copious amounts of time and an Honorverse Technical Bible. It is why I steer clear of the technical threads. I read them sometimes. They are really interesting, but I respect that the posters there are serious. I had to get my head sewn back on once because I suggested something stupid in one of the more technical threads. It was hillarious the scathing that I received but I understand--you guys are serious.

But the Cupid thread and similarly started threads are more light hearted. Of course misunderstandings will still occur, but let it be because of a lack of needed conciseness and not because one has his hand on his side arm.

We hear and obey! :D

We need more characters before we can really ship Travis with anyone...

In current Honorverse characters, how about Alquezar and Caitrin?

See, the difference between some men and some women, we don't need more characters. Two timing infidelitists should be quite common in the Honorverse. As long as you don't date two different women on the same planet. Or if you have your own runabout--the same system.

If I was a Manticoran I'd be dating a girl on Grayson as well. Something about long hair, long twirly dresses that talk when you walk and Princesses that curtsy to a bow.

But guys have to be careful because some Manticoran women would recognize the different grade of Grayson lipstick on your collar, and the fact that you smell like recirculated air.

That's why I'd want to be a Manticoran expat living on Grayson. Manticoran wages should be able to support three wives reasonably well, and I'd have the cute Manticoran accent working for me too (as against the real world, where I only have a boring ol' English one). Not to mention that Grayson styles of dress and fashion are extremely...interesting.

Ahem...back on topic, now.

Hey, I wonder how things would work out if Shannon and Sonja decided to take shore leave on Beowulf?

Don't know 'bout Shannon and Sonja but that thought sure has my imaginative juices (npi) flowing. On that note it seems that Beowulf would be a tourist attraction for the uninhibited.

Also, Shannon and Sonja would have to bring along a third person. This is Beowulf! Even booths have at least three seats on Beowulf.

Old Earth's saying of 'two's company three's a crowd' has been changed on Beowulf to 'three's company bring us a crowd.'

*Sonja and Shannon should take along Abigail, to lighten her up.

*There's suddenly been a huge increase in armsmen applications. Hope mine is at the top. I tried to make it stand out with spots of cologne, or was that drool?

Continue the good works.

Am I imagining it? and is there a matching sweet 16 for Manticorans? And what of Beowulf? Not sure I should even inquire of Beowulf.

Seems like the lofty socialite of Manticore would have a formal sweet 16 for certain.

I don't remember mention of gangly Honor even having a prom.

I would not at all be surprised if Grayson had a debutante ball or something similar for its aristocratic girls. That seems like a tradition that would have hung on in that particular society.

I didn't have a "Sweet Sixteen" as such because I was with my family in Colorado (at least I think we were in Colorado that summer), but given my personality, I never liked big parties anyway, so that suited me just fine. If anyone I knew did have one, it was one I would hear about through the grapevine and quietly thank God I didn't have to go to.

You know, Elizabeth should also throw a coming out party for Grayson girls about to enter the Navy. I can imagine an elaborate function, let's call it something fancy like Juste Voyage Inaugural Ball (Fair Maiden Voyage Ball), designed to say goodbye to their old ways of thinking and welcoming the coming opportunities, after which a Queen/Protector sponsored T-month trip to Beowulf. With sentiments being that after a month on Beowulf, Grayson Princesses interacting in close quarters aboard ship with Manticorans would be a piece of cake. Abigail did fine but there's no guarantee that succeeding Grayson women will be acclimated so easily.

Only caveat being, 'What happens on Beowulf does not stay on Beowulf.' Hey, they're a proud people. Why do you think they all left Vegas!?

This Juste Voyage Inaugural Ball will become the stuff of legends. Cupid arrows will be flying amok!

Allen Higgins and Mercedes Brigham could be the first pair of Chapperone de Princesse (Princess Chapperone)
