During world war 2 P.O.Ws sent to the USA were treated (on the whole) very well so well that many put weight on HOWEVER in March 1945 onwards when the Allies captured millions of prisoners over 1% of previosuly healthy young men died in U.S camps due to many reasons but some being the discovery of the death camps and the inablity to logisically feed so many people through a destroyed infrastructure. and lastly but interestingly the inablity of the Germnas to retalitate anymore by killing Allied P.O.Ws
This lead one person to make the fallacious comment that the camps were Eisenhower's "death camps" (1% deaths do not a death camp make) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Other_Losses However the situation in Germany both in terms of a bitter hard fought war destroyed infrastructure and the exitence of Nazi concentration camps relates to Safehold I suspect that in the next year or two the allies will be capturing or overrunning millions of P.O.Ws or TL civilians as they push forward. Will they be able (or even willing) to feed the P.O.Ws given that they will see so many Death camps and have only a limited amount of surplus food? How will Siddarmark feel about feeding so many enemies with limited food supplies when they lost so many loved ones to starvation and need to rebuild from scratch the entire central and western republic? |

Hi Alistair,
Given the known health problems of many of the recruits the Germans enrolled at the end of the war (with special medical detachments for entire units with the same condition to try to cope), a 1% loss rate is actually low under the circumstances, and the author was more sensational in his rhetoric and scholarship than accurate or fair. We have textev that 20% of the remaining AoJ was killed before it had to choose between starvation or surrender, for a loss range from 35-49K (from the original 175 to the maximum 245K w/o including the indeterminate '~20%' march losses) which could mean almost 200,000 Desnarians did surrender. Which might explain why DE is too busy to chase Ahlverez. We still don't know what happened to all the horses, or the captured supplies, but the ICA ought to be able to feed them better than they were using both sources, until more supplies arrive via the canal. When Paul Von Lettow-Vorbeck surrendered after WWI, he had to feed the Brits he surrendered to from his captured British rations, whose insufferable superiority ticked his men off, who still wanted to fight. The main problem for DE is what do we do with them now? Send them to SC or the old province to farm, dig a canal, rebuild roads? L
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

I keep pondering the fate of the Harchong nobles who were taken prisoner at the defeat of the Navy of God. During the Middle Ages it was common practice to allow families of noble prisoners to get them released by paying a ransom. If the Empire of Charis offered to exchange the Harchong nobles for ransom it would be a win-win situation. Charis would get the ransom, and at the same time would ensure that future Harchong naval efforts would be similar disasters. No noble family could actually refuse to ransom their kin, no matter how secretly relieved they may be that great uncle Blossoming Begonia is far, far away from home.

Not going to happen. 1) Clyntahn would have them 'interviewed' by a few of his inquisitors upon their return. 2) The families would be given the same treatment for trafficking with heretics. 3) What would happen to the units of the ICN/ICMC/ICA that would have to do this, can you say ambush by inquisitors if they catch wind of a swap. |

I enjoy the thought of thousands of demoralized troops being marched through the scorched desert of their own making, to begin to reconstruct. Bring home to each and everyone of them that this is the price of their war. Make them rebuild the canals, and repair the roads. Treat them well and fairly, but never for an instant let them forget what their own side did and the aftermath of it. Or better yet break them up into parcel packets and distribute them throughout the empire. If they ever did escape and somehow got back to the mainland, I am sure Clyntan would see them as tainted by the heresy.

I wonder if Harchong rank and file POWs were to be offered a chance to work at the Silverlode mines for 5 years at a modest wage and then choose between repatriation and a farm stead, which would a POW choose? I am sure more than a few captured harchongese soldiers would choose a farm stead.

There was talk on this board about supporting the immigration of the Harchonese families of those home steaders. That would entail a more complex operation but would be worth it. Bribing the Harchongese bureaucrats to allow women to immigrate to Silverlode would work as a start. |

It worked during the Middle Ages, including the Crusades where Christians were pitted against Muslims. Of course, there were years of military traditions of war on both sides that covered this, and the tradition did not seem to balk at religion when it came to getting your high-level aristocrats back.
