Thanks! Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Just finished the Safehold. First of all from naval perspective next step in weapons would be experientation in mines and torpedo concepts. Temple Navy sooner or later shall begin copying armor design of Imperial Charisian Navy. Mines and then torpedos would be another step ahead in destroying them below waterline where they would be vulnerable.
What fossil fuel else Charis can use in industry and transportation ? Is there any fossil oil fiels , can they use distilled petrolum products ? On land I think we shall see early prototypes of Gatling guns soon. Inperial Army would need every ounce firepower. |

From my perspective a coup/revolution will happen in the church. Duchairn/Magwair know at some level it will come down to them or Clyntan. What I see unfolding is there will be a coup. The guard or at least a portion of the guard will side with Duchairn, the other will abstain or follow the inquisitors leads. Clyntan will see the way the winds blowing and will evac zion of his people or at least his command staff, probably instituting a burn it all and let god sort it out. He and his forces will fall back into Harchong, who will immediately recall their forces. Those forces who have received more leadership, training and equipment from other forces (magwair's) will either join the other faction or return. Either way you are returning large numbers of serf/troops to Harchong (recipe for revolution, think russia 1917). What you will end up with is a no mans land of multisided civil war in temple lands. The southern kingdoms (Dolar, Desnair) will be played out at least in the short term. Harchong will be arming to be the redoubt of orthodoxy, and Siddermark and will be reluctant to push farther for economic and war weariness. At that stage you have a good point at which to bring the conflict to a close. You have broken the strangle hold of the church, without smashing every empire. And you have also Created several technical bright spots throughout allied and church territory. As well as sort of gaining access to the temple.

There have been experiments using petrolium based fules. Corisande has an earldom called Blackwater. That suggests pretty easy to reach deposits of oil. I suspect gatling guns will be bypassed by the Empire. They will be using smokeless bolt actions by Summer. It would be wiser to direct Howsmyn's crew towards developing the automatic action for rifles and handguns first. Machine guns based on that action would be far mor effective than gatling guns. |

Semi automatic or automatic firearms may not be the best way to go, for some reasons that have more to do with leadership and experience than technical ability.
Consider that the various armies of Safehold have been working in dense pike squares, shield walls and other infantry formations from our late Middle Ages to early Renaissance. Command and control, formation sizes, communications and everything else is still scaled around close ranks of soldiers working in formation. As firearms advanced past smoothbore muskets, formations gradually opened up (although it was more the growing impact of artillery that forced open tactics), and command and control, as well as everything from ranks to the size and composition of formations changed. The senior commanders in Safehold have personally fought in battles using edged weapons and muscle power, and their subordinate commanders right down to the Sergeants in charge of files of soldiers all come from the same experience base, and have the same world view. While in the abstract you can say building a platoon around a Browning M-1919 machine gun or Lewis gun would provide a huge increase in firepower, and issuing individual infantrymen M-14's or FN-FAL battle rifles (or AK-47 assault rifles) would make each individual the equal of "x" CoGA soldiers, the reality is the command structure isn't designed to utilize this much firepower, nor effectively command troops dispersed over a wide battlefield. At the same time, the troops realistically have no training or experience to effectively use these tools. A battle under these conditions might resemble Pickett's charge if the Confederates were advancing with AK-47's and firing from the hip. They would still be torn to pieces by the artillery, and (as in the real battle) would still lack a means of communicating to their Division and Corps commanders that the supporting files were needed to secure the position. Bolt action rifles along the line of the Lee-Enfield coupled to rigorous training will probably suffice; British riflemen at the Battle of Loos in 1915 poured so much aimed, accurate rifle fire into the advancing Germans they thought they were being machine gunned (and this at a time the British Army still only had two machine guns per battalion). No CoGA formation will be able to reply to that storm of firepower, yet the regular British Army of the day would have the command and internal structure that the Safeholdians would be able to understand and emulate. |

VERY good point there - having the weapon (i.e. semi-automatic rifles) is not the entire story. You need the means to effectively use it. As you point out, this is effective small unit tactics, appropriate leadership selection and training, communication ability, logistics, etc. Taking this point further, this means that weapon tech will eventually plateau, until other tech (i.e. communications) catches up. (For example, there is no need for massive artillery pieces with a large reach, if you lack the ability for the FOD to direct it.) .
