Some things inspire grudges. And deserve them.

I was programming computers before there was MS-DOG. I was there when they rolled it out. I tested it, and found it to be a fewking awful wretched steaming pile of crap. I found out its origins. Know what Seattle Microcomputer called it? QD-DOS -- for Quick-N-Dirty. They hacked it up as a lab tool for internal use only. They certainly never intended it to be sold to IBM!

There were better OS's back in 1982. There was CP/M-86 (the real thing, not a hacked-up mess), and Gem, and OS-9. People were developing great stuff, with tremendous promise. Then IBM dumped out this festering turd. Unfortunately for us all, the bean counters that actually made buying decisions were clueless about computers; they thought they were buying some sort of improved adding machine, and IBM was the king of adding machines. These things must be Really Great. By hitching a ride on the 800 pound gorilla, MS crushed out most of the competition and stifled independent development for years.

I was there when MS stole Stacker, and got away with it. Apple licensed some GUI code to them for the sole purpose of developing MS-OFFICE for the Mac, and they hacked it up into MS-win-blows. I watched them destroy Wordperfect by giving them "advance documentation" for the interface specs for MS-win-blows 95 -- and then releasing it with a completely different interface. I saw them kill Netscape by deliberately making MS-win-blows cause it to crash. They tried to take over the Internet by corrupting the HTML standard and blaming the resulting incompatibilities on everybody else. They tried to co-opt Java by making their own incompatible version of it until Sun sued them and won, and they had to change the name to .NET and C-hash.

Where did Google get their motto? "Don't be evil". From watching the evil up north, that's where.

I have earned my contempt for Gates, and MS, and all its products. I will continue to beg people to use something - anything! - else. And I will advocate for Linux because it is so much better, and truly free - everybody is free to use it for any purpose without paying vigorish to anybody. If you have an old computer that has gotten so constipated with MS-win-blows that it barely runs, you can install Linux for little effort and no money, and try it out.
You can't do that with anything else.

I'd like to buy you a drink. Except I don't.
Microsoft's unfair practices continues.
Windows 8 machines encourages manufacturers to disable access to secure boot and legacy mode in an attempt to thwart installation of other OS's.

I could go on. But I'd be preaching to the choir.

The biggest technology backer wins out.

Linux vs winblows.

The sad thing is how much damage Microsoft does to the advancement of computer technology.

The sadder thing is that the masses seem to be oblivious of it.

The sadddest thing is that the beat OS is free, yet the bulk of humanity wastes it.

We the people have been taken by so many schemes that we fear things offered for free.

Free is too good to be true.
We are taught to beware things that are too good to be true.

Linux almost is too good to be true.

The very saddest thing of all, is while we as a whole are bewaring of Linux we are being taken by the biggest scheme of all Microsucking Winblows, and they're charging us dearly to screw us.

And get this...we renew our subscription to the screw with each OS.

And they don't even try to use a prophylactic. Just bareback you all the way.

And you can't use KY-gel, 'cause it no longer works with this version.

Yes, android is a stripped down version of Linux.
It was mentioned earlier.

That's part of the power and charm of Linux, it can be adapted to run on just about any hardware, and it has been.

There is no way a desktop version of Windows, with all of its bloated code, and resource hungry state can run on such a resource constrained platform that runs android.

As an operator who works in many environments, I can understand both sides of this 'discussion'. As an enthusiast I burned up a mother board, a video card and a computer monitor (separate events) while doing an Linux installation back in the day. The system used to be the exclusive playground of geeks and nerds.

With the advent of much better user interfaces, your average user cannot tell the difference between a Windows environment or a Unix based one. Indeed, for them it is irrelevant. All they want is results.

I have 4 children, and the ensures I have a large number of computers. They all need access for their school work. They want access for their games and social media. And they are all, as is my wife, past masters at clicking on things they shouldn't when on the web. Working on trickle down theory, computers in my house just bump down to the next child when some one else gets something better. This has resulted in machines running DOS 5, ME, XP, Vista, 7, 8 and Linux in the house. They all need to be able to access the network. They all need to share data and print. It's a nightmare to integrate.

The loss of legacy support for the older systems, especially when new hardware is involved makes this worse. The headache is silly. Yet I, a reasonably intelligent individual with experience in all the environments mentioned, still use Windows. It comes with the computer, the average user is comfortable with it and is simply too lazy to change.

There is no real reason people could not change to Unix/Linux beyond preference and being comfortable with Windows.

I believe that the longevity of Unix based systems and their ability to take far better advantage of system resources does make them superior to Windows. I run DOS 5.1, Linux and Win 7 on my laptop. I've been using the LILO boot tool for about forever, shifting environments as I needed to for whatever I was doing.

Personally I can't stand Windows products and only use them because when I want to play a game it's designed for that environment.

Just my two cents worth.

As an aside:

The US Navy uses Windows to run it's submarine server networks which deals with the admin of the ship. Most of the hardware which is electronically run, however, is either Unix based or derived. Everything else, generally, is proprietary software made by the company to run their electronics, i.e. sonar, fire control, etc. The equipment, such as the reactor controls hardware, simply has an interface which allows the sailors to view and edit parameters with a Window's based machine, even though the hardware involved isn't using Windows.

ATM's were recently in the news due to an XP problem which was causing the ATM's to issue stamps instead of cash! When the banks tried to get support from Microsoft for the problem, they were told there was no support. That XP, as a legacy system, was something they could no longer help with. While I found the story amusing, it does point to a large problem with legacy issues. As common usage systems, like ATMs, continue to age and their software is no longer supported, what will happen?
