Alison Harrington discovered that Grayson folks had, in fact, been modified back in their beginnings to survive on the planet.
Now those mods have been found and the problems with them identified will all the new immigrants to Grayson be getting a new and improved version of them to make living on Grayson safer for them? Will Honor and her family be getting them? Will Grayson natives get new forms of them to mend the problems with the original fast and dirty mods rather than the stopgap fix Alison created for the interim? Thoughts?? Apologies if the topic has been done before and I missed it. |

Modern Grayson is a lot better at preventative measures which the early settlers didn't have and/or lost. Their environmental tech, especially after Grayson Sky Domes domed all the cities, keeps the atmosphere clean, and I'm willing to bet that it's quite easy to get medical nanites to clean up anything which gets through. So long as they don't go swimming in Grayson's lakes or the like, a non-Grayson should be fine. It's not as if Honor or her parents had any problems.

That might be against the Beowulf code. In the Graysons the gene is already there and causing health issues, But I believe the code limits you to what genes a person started with unless the gene in question is damaged or harmful. Any genetic "medeling" must end up inside the human norm. For-ex you may remove a gene which causes Downs or mental retardation, but you cannot graft Steven Hawking's Intelligence Gene in it's place or intentionally tweak the replacemnt to such levels. Genetic manulipation of the population to match the geography (instead of terraforming) was promoted by Leonard Detweile, and was one of the ways he clashed with the Beowulf establishment IIRC. ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |

Granted, but the characters still talk about the dangers, ergo they still exist. Also there is the ongoing situation with the problems the original mods give Grayson natives. Is a real and transmissible gen fix in the works? As contrasted with Alison's kill all eggs with the problem fast dirty and scary to traditional Grayson folks fix? As is pointed out in the books, many trad Grayson folks are afraid to get the treatment lest ALL their eggs be destroyed. Gen mods to adapt to certain planetary environments are allowed, IIRC. Honor is an example. This would be in that class. It also would, done right, hurt no one and cause no one any problems if they move off Grayson. We're talking a tolerance for heavy metals, here, not recreating Scrags or any other such ick. |

I wonder if the grayson modifications would be adapted to allow other similarly poisonous planets to be colonised safely.

Not that the Grayson mods exactly make the planet safe, just survivable. The Grayson mods are also unlikely to be an ideal, or even particularly good, solution given the conditions under which they were developed and that they are the result of tech that is ~1600 years out of date compared to the modern Honorverse. Also colony worlds are not in such short supply in the Honorverse that ones with problems as major as Grayson would be considered without a very good reason, eg a wormhole |

And even then, construction of large space habitats is a solved problem in the Honorverse. Unless there's actually something on the planet you need, no reason to settle a world like that. Of course, if your ancestors did and survived a few millennia, then you think it's your planet and you're darn well not leaving it. |

Another point for Allison to consider is the possibility that the "fix" might increase introduction of new problems. She states in her talk with Rev. Sullivan that there are "many" possible genetic abnormalities associated with that particular gene site area. a slight miscalculation could bring about even worse results.

SAy some poisonous planet while deadly, could be very profitable, so any long term population would choose to give their kids a way to deal with the long term issue of exposure. Grayson while deal, is an excellent osurce of those deadly materials, so easily produced for industry.

As far as I know, the Beowulf Code doesn't have a significant issue with genetic mods to a population to handle an environmental problem. What they've got a problem with is genetic mods to "improve" someone or some group of people where there isn't a clear environmental reason. The basic reason RFC gave is that they don't want a recurrence of "racism." The distaste for environmental mods is tied into the general dislike of "genies," and RFC has stated that, if Manpower hadn't been keeping the issue stirred up with its genetic slaves, that issue might have died down by the time of the novels. |
