Well, I suppose firstly she hasn't been to Sphinx?

In in-universe terms, the Treecat colonization effort has just started a couple of weeks ago. While there may be a colony on the way to torch, I find it more likely that any extra-sphinxian activity will likely be concentrated on the Manticore system for the moment. And let us not forget that not every cat is capable of entering a bond with a human, and that even among the ones that are, bonds are not guaranteed.

Basically, not every major character in the setting is going to get a Treecat companion. Bodyguard, sure, but not bondmate.

Sorry, how do we have to understand that? Treecat adoption is not a concept that has to be advanced, if you mean that. It just happens, and the vast majority of treecats lives quite happily without adoption.

Treecat adoption is quite rare, in general. Despite the fact we see a lot of them in books, it's not really representative of how many there actually are. For example, in Tenth Fleet, there are exactly two people who are adopted, and Michelle Henke thinks that is a high number of adoptees in the fleet.

Mike Henke herself is a perfect candidate for adoption in my opinion, given her family. She's probably been on Sphinx for long stretches, given who her best friend is. And no adoption. It's very rare.
