***Warning!!!*** The following will be boring to those that know or have played the game.

I am getting this if it's the last thing I ever do. I still have my original release day copy of the game, including the absolutely wonderful 7" x 9" 115 page game manual/background and history info book. I also have the free Raider Retreat add-on that was released shortly after the game as a disc you could pick up at game stores (I don't know if it's available for download). RR was a couple of missions that were dropped from the game shortly before release because they weren't ready, didn't flow with the storyline well, there wasn't room on a single CD for it, or some combination of any or all of those reasons.

It was pretty much the first true 3D real time strategy game ever developed. 3D in the sense that you could position the camera in *any* position, as well as move your ships to any spot on the map, including above or below the starting plane. Ships are "to scale" to one another, although there's still a little "cheating" in it.

The storyline is a bit cliche, but still good in its implementation, and while the graphics would be considered garbage nowadays, they were fantastic 14 years ago, and in some ways, still look good today. Especially the backgrounds.

But the real draw for me is the music combined with the graphics. I'm glad that they are keeping the same music, as it really gave a nice feel for the story and imagery.

Here's the opening sequence of the game: http://youtu.be/yrW4jkQdmjI

I can just imagine how it's going to look with the updated graphics.

Homeworld 2 isn't quite as good gameplay and story-wise, but the graphics are much better. The music isn't quite as good as the original, but it's consistent the length of the game, which is good, IMO. It has more of a Middle-Eastern feel to it.

Wonderful news! I've been looking forward to this ever since the news of the franchise sale was announced. One thing I thought was really amusing from the original- apparently the developers started grabbing metrics on the vertical dimension.

90% of players completely ignored it unless someone was hammering them from up or down. 10% of players used the z axis to completely dominate the multiplayer game.

Both the Sins of a Solar Empire and Sword of the Stars halves of the dev team quietly removed the effective use of the third dimension from their game.

Pity.

I've played SoaSE, but only the original game, and only once. That's not really my type of thing, especially since I also *never* play MP. It was a decent game, but just not what I was hoping for (which was *not* a Homeworld clone).

Based on what little info there is, I'm reading it that all they're doing is upgrading the graphics and original sound files, and tweaking to play nice with current hardware and Windows - they damn well better *not* be removing any gameplay elements, including the z-axis. I may not have used it much, but I *did* use it on occasion.

I also hope they leave the "hand drawn" cinematics intact.

I might have to re-install Windows on something when it comes out.

I find it a little disappointing that this re-release doesn't include Cataclysm (in my opinion the best of the homeworld games)

Amen to that! Now if only I could get the original running on my computer again...

Really? I thought it was the weakest.

IMO, Cataclysm was never canon. It's not a bad game, but I just felt it didn't fit with the original. I also feel the same about HW2, but not quite as much.

As for the reasons it's not included, it may be that Gearbox wasn't able to acquire the rights to it, since it was done by Barking Dog and not Relic.

I have no problems with a direct install from the disc. I'm running Win7 Pro 64-bit. TBH, I don't recall if I have to set it to compatibility mode, but it runs just fine on my system. The only real issue is that even with tweaking the config files, I can't get normal ship proportions on a widescreen monitor. It'll *play* fine at 1920x1080, but everything is stretched horizontally.

That's one reason I'm looking forward to this remaster. Not to mention, I really *ought* to retire that game disc - it's the original release day disc. No, I don't rip game discs and use cracks. That's *not* a judgement call on my part - it's just not my thing.

I lost my Home world music CD I used to play it when I worked at a tech college as background.

Home world 2 is great although cataclysm as the beast was always fun. HW2 had the best stealth tech and jamming satellites especially in dust clouds. Add in mines and things get better and better. Cataclysm has a great termini example, on some maps. In HW2 termini are technological, place able and make non hyper capable ships very useful.

Homeworld(s) was a superb game, one of my favourites ever (though, to be honest, there are quite a few "favourites ever" ;) ). It's the first mission that immediately drew me in - that haunting, desperate, lonely beautiful music playing as you try to load onboard the last, few survivors of your race as your planet burns beneath you. Magnificent.
