But wasn't it Pat whom always showed up without a formal invite when Caparelli was there, sort of their unspoken habit?

The Pit is at Admiralty House, not Saganami Island. It is actually where Pat works, not Tom. He is the one dropping by for informal briefings.

I'm not sure what rose, cthia, and KNick are doing but I've thought of another possible pairing.

Spencer Hawke and Sheila Thiessen. There was some rapport (mostly of the non-verbal variety) going on when Honor was in Nouveau Paris to negogiate a treaty.
