After giving us Honor/Paul, Javier/Eloise, Honor/Hamish/Emily, Gwen/Helga, Helen/Paulo, and Anton/Cathy - not to mention assorted secondary and already-established secondary relationships like Alfred/Allison and Aivars/Sinead - David Weber really doesn't have room to talk. After all, he started it! :D

In my head, he is married offscreen to someone we haven't met yet, but that was just the impression I got and kind of where my head is regarding him.

The other possibility that has danced through my mind - and others' too - is LePic/Theisman.

Sorry, rose And Cthia. Oversteegan and Hearns is a no-go. For her it would be like marrying her own father. When she asks him "And will you be present, Sir?", I hear "And will you be present, Dad?" He true father does not understand her desire to be in the Navy. Her military father does.

Honestly, I don't think so. I've never gotten that vibe from them. If Abigail has a military father, it's Aivars Terekhov - and isn't that relationship a beauty to behold!

No, Oversteegen is something else entirely. A mentor... rather similar to one Captain Harrington and Admiral Alexander, perhaps? :D

I agree that I don't think it would happen where we are in the timeline now, but in the future.... ;)

I agree with KNick. Oversteegen got her as a middy. She already had her role model in Honor. What she didn't have was a parental figure who understood her driving passion. A figure that understood the aristocracy's God given responsibility to watch over the less nobly born. To use those advantages of birth to make society work better. That's what Oversteegen was to midshipman Hearns. He was that authority figure that connected her society's traditions to those of the SEM in a very fundemental way.

Oversteegen is to Abby what Adm. Courvoisier was to Honor.

See, you've basically, word-for-word, expressed why I think they're perfect for each other, but you're reading their relationship entirely differently than I do. I don't see anything parental about it. Mentoring, yes. Absolutely. But mentor relationships can change - as Honor and Hamish prove so well.

No, I think for her, he's the mentor she's unconsciously half in love with - and she's the lovely young woman he's unconsciously been trying not to think about since that business in Tiberian. Do either of them know it, right now? No. Absolutely not. As I've said, her relationship with Aivars Terekhov reminds me far more strongly of Honor and Courvosier than her relationship with Oversteegen ever did. (And I'm going to continue to try very hard not to think of them in that sense, because it'll destroy one of my favorite pairings! :D )

In fact, they remind me almost painfully of Daine and Numair from Tamora Pierce's Tortall books. Which is, perhaps, why I want them to be together so badly.

Which isn't to say I think they're set in stone. Far from it. For one thing, Michael has that delicious UST-laden banter with Michelle Henke. For another, Michael Mayhew has also been bandied about as a possible candidate for Miss Owens' heart, and then there's all those wonderful Havenites we haven't met yet - or the ones we have, like Warner Caslet. (Which is another of my pet pairings.)

But truthfully, I think Abigail and Michael are perfectly suited to each other, and until and unless it's directly contradicted in the text and/or one or both of them is happily hooked up with someone else, I'm sticking to it.

How about Diamato/Truman? I have no idea what their respective ages are though...

My weird head cannon would actually be Shannon Foraker/Herlander Simoes. They'd have so much in common, be working in close contact with each other, and have brilliant and socially oblivious babies.
Cup of tea? Yes, please.

I am not trying to change your mind. Just presenting another POV. Btw, Honor never felt for Hamish what she did for Raoul. She recognized Hamish's support but that was a distant patronage. They never developed an intimate mentorship until the seniority developed some parity.

Michael needs a deft foil to test his guard. Recall his verbal sparing with WEB Duhavel. That's what he needs. Mike Henke is a much better match. However attractive he might find Abby, the difference in their seniority would stifle any potential repartee. Once their ranks grow more similar and that sort of repartee can happen. By then though, their relationship will have been pretty well defined.

Sure things change. However, IMNSHO the degree of change would have to be pretty big to weave Abby and Michael together. YMMV.

Would their relationship be defined, though? Since Gauntlet they've been in completely different chains of command and have barely been in contact with each other. Sure, they're both members of Tenth Fleet, but she's with the Rolands, he's with the Nikes. They are not functionally interacting with each other much, if at all. We know Michael read the reports from Monica with more than his usual tactician's alacrity because of Abigail's involvement, and that seems, to me, how he's getting his news of her; secondhand, from the people who actually are working with her.

Within a year or two, she'll have moved back to the GSN. We know Graysons accrue seniority faster than even in a wartime RMN, and Abigail is as good as they come. She'll be in an entirely different navy then; his news of her will likely come through Michelle, via Honor.

So what happens when he encounters Captain Abigail Hearns, Grayson Space Navy? Someone who, no longer bound by being terribly junior to him - as, indeed, she wouldn't be, as she's no longer serving with the RMN? We know Abigail has a brilliant mind and the will to use it. For all her femininity and her quiet strength, she's not afraid to stand up and say what she thinks, or to argue her position. I think she could be that foil to Michael - remember, she's a steadholder's daughter. Perhaps her wit isn't as flashy or outwardly vivacious as Michelle Henke or WEB DuHavel, but it is most certainly there - and she would most certainly keep him on his toes.

Remember, I'm not saying you're wrong. I'll hardly be a-wailing on the ground in agony if they don't end up together, after all, as long as whoever they do end up with makes sense. (I've mentioned before my partiality to Abigail and Warner Caslet!)

What I am trying to do is explain to you why I think it's possible, and maybe slightly more than possible. I know I have a reputation for shipping everything with a pulse, and in one sense I do, but one thing I don't do is create pairings out of whole cloth for no better reason than "they're single and hot!" When I really do believe in a pairing - as I do in this one - I do have a reason. In this particular case, I have many of them. I'm trying to show you - and everyone else who winds up reading this - why I believe in them so strongly, because, in a sense, I think I owe it to them to do so.

The funny thing is, while I read this thread, I'm not really much of a shipper-- I'm terrible at picking out pairings. But I'm definitely a Disney Princess sort of girl; I want everyone to have happy endings everywhere.

And being married I try not to swoon too much over men, even fictional ones-- but I'll admit to having trouble keeping my distance from Tom Theisman. :D

Hey, Rose.

You've forgotten another possibility for Abby. Carson Clinkscales. Close to the same age, similar cultural background and a neat way to tie the Owens Steading to the Harrington Steading.
