In the story Changer of Worlds Samantha and Nimitz visit Nimitz's clan. During that visit Samantha talks to the elders and memory singers of Bright Water Clan about the danger. She tells them that she and Nimitz have decided to raise their treekittens off world. They invite other treecats to come with them. The treecats set up a colony on Grayson at Harrington steading with Honor's help.

I completely agree. We know that at least twenty treecats are moving to Nouveau Paris to work with the Republic and the Cabinet, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if a few 'settlers' went along too. I just wish we had a short story about them!!

About those treecats on Grayson.

Treecats like living in the wild. But most of Grayson is dangerous. How does that work exactly?

They'd probably find it very hard to live in an old-style Grayson steading, but with the advent of the domes it's easy to keep large open spaces like parks free of contamination. Plenty of room to run, jump, climb and terrorise the local wildlife.

It still just does not work for me. Perhaps I fail to realize the size of the domes. But in my mind's eye I can't perceive of a park large enough to hold and sustain an advanced treecat clan.

Advanced by a few generations. It seems the treecats would over hunt the local fauna. New fauna from the outside just can't be introduced because their diet would have consisted of poisoned sources. And someone had better plant some frickin' celery!

Then as more time elapses they'll be other clans and eventually territorial disputes!

It was mentioned early on that treecats on Grayson are going to be a different breed, ones more comfortable with living in close proximity to humans. I doubt we will ever see a 'wild' treecat clan on Grayson, the way they live on Sphinx - instead, we're going to see 'cats living intertwined with humans, living as part of human households, eating farmed food and probably holding down jobs among human society.

ETA: And 'wild' is probably the wrong word - we don't call hunter-gatherer societies on earth 'wild', after all, and treecats are not exactly being domesticated or tamed by humans. 'Independent' vs 'integrated' may be better terms.

HoS notes that all treecats on Grayson live in Harrington Dome, except for those bonded to people who live elsewhere. We know that Harrington Dome has a large park, with a Sphinxian habitat. But as others have pointed out, they aren't trying to live in the trees on Grayson. They are living with humans.

I actually meant 'living in the wild.'

But evenso, my thoughts wander to a Nimitz on that first visit to Mount Royal Palace, or a subsequent one, where he leaped from the shoulder of Honor and terrrorized a chipmunk just to keep his hunting skills sharpened.

This promises to be a new breed of treecat for certain, but I wonder if the treecats aren't giving up too much.

I suspect if it came down to it, Honor could use Sky Domes to build one or more domes specifically as range sized treecat habitats in her steading and establish a forestry rangers section of the Harrington Guard to "manage"/protect it. There are advantages to being an obscenely wealthy autocrat, after all.

You make it sound like the idea is a money sink. Such a park would undoubtedly make money. Charge admission for people who wish to walk through and enjoy designated areas. The treecats can engage or not as they see fit. Heck, there might even be designated areas where treecats and humans can do actual business. In any case, there are revenue opportunities enough to pay for the dome.
