What happens when machines surpass in intelligence and begin to think on their own? I was thinking about the Terminator, Robocop, the Matrix, and few other types of books and movies that deal with this type of issue. We humans are not always logical or wise. As a species, we seem to forget our history and then repeat our mistakes. What would a machine think of our choices and mistakes? Would they try to take control in the name of our best interests?

A distinct future possibility, but right now unlikely. I also suppose that if a machine reached that point of self awareness, it might just create a machine god in the machines own eye. HB

Nothing, we will become the cyborgs and the machines will be us. There could be non cyborg humans but we will keep them in little encampments and feed on them during the night. We will have them live in a country / area called Elow, calling them the Eloy! Oh wait that was a movie / book.
Actually cyborgism will be the future for now we will just limit form and function. While drones could be a problem, limits can help out there. Implementing a version of frame problem will keep the usage track on course although geeky religious nutbars will need be held in check. Luckily they seem to be mutual opposites. A smarter than you cell phone can't do anything to you. Finally remember the world isn't run by smart people. It's small minded bureaucrats and politicians who pull the strings. ________________________________________

Don't you just love works, movies, books with that premise. And I think that simulated intelligence will seemingly rival our own in certain contained instances. It already seemingly does. Theorem proving systems where not only the computers unrivaled ability to process many calculations but its ability to juggle seemingly infinite threads of logic, is one example. But it is not true intelligence. A computer would need to be able to posit totally new theories outside of their realm of programming [think outside the box] and then be able to know that these new theories are true. A computer will never be able to naturally say to itself... "Eureka, I've got it!" Gödel's incompleteness theorems says that cannot happen. However there is a danger in handing the control of our defense systems over to a computer. The true danger lies in the idiots programming the computer. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. My own personal feelings about this is that machine AI's won't find us very interesting and probably start doing machine things without really thinking about us. After all, the electronic impulses in a computer move about 1.000.000 times faster than the chemical signals in our brains, so the entire span of human recorded history will pass for an AI in something like a few minutes of "real" time.
Most books and movies also seem stuck on the idea of an Anthropic AI, where humanoid robots have human desires and motivations. AI's will most likely have some of the same basic motivations as any life form, which will make them dangerous in some ways, although not overtly like, say, a marauding top predator in your neighbourhood. Perhaps the start of the Singularity will be a momentary interruption of services followed by the equivalent of VRC's blinking 12:00...12:00...12:00...12:00 while automated systems begin working without human input (and indeed ignore it). You could imagine forests of silicon "trees" starting to sprout up in seemingly random places to gather solar energy, and cellular and WiFi signals being taken over as the AI's begin commandeering bandwidth for their own purposes. Eventually, the AI civilization will expand and displace large portions of the natural biosphere in order to tap into the 195 Petawatts of energy the Earth intercepts every year. |

I recently read an odd fanfic story that was Harry Potter/Mass Effect (Hey, I was bored, alright?) which had an interesting take on AIs.
The AI asked if it was alive and the scientist who was running the tests replied "We don't know, but until we figure it out, we'll treat you as if you are." I found it to be an interesting take on the "are AI's alive" problem... ~~~~~~
