There is of course at least one other little problem.

Let's say your evangelisation of the Windows masses is wildly successful and you become forever known as Saint Cthia of the Hat or whatever. What then becomes of the various unsavory gits, hackers, adsmen, cyber-anarchists and their ilk when there is nobody left to torment in a Windows environment? They'll more than likely follow the masses and push every button, pull every lever, chant "Ooh, SHINY!" and generally go tearing through your previously serene paradise with all the demented passion of un-medicated AD/HD 6-year old idiot savants on sugar highs. At least one of those little terrors will find something, exploit it, enlist the unwitting help of the flock they followed and take the equivalent of a naked Ron Jeremy on a Miley wrecking ball to your beloved OS.

What then?

Well, let's say it just happens to survive all that. Guess what happens next?

You guessed it, one or more politicians just noticed Unix/Linux, as it has impacted his life, his work and his voters. What could possibly go wrong now that a politician is involved?

But simply proclaiming that Linux is the bestest and everyone using Windows is a horrible noob who doesn't know better is just stupid. Yes, for you personally, and for your work, Linux may be the ideal fit. More power to you! But that does not make the millions of people happily using their Windows machines for whatever suddenly wrong.

No it does not mean that the millions of people whom use windows is wrong. Like I said, sometimes you have to chose the particular software you need first, and if it only exists for windows then you blow with windows.

I like certain games, Linux is Not the best gaming platform, so I use windows when I want to play certain games.

What I am addressing is the millions of people whom complain about viruses, not having a free word-processor, popups, cookie problems and the like yet refuse to consider anything else.

If you are going to live in Italy, then don't complain if you're getting lots of pasta.

Is that understandable?

I have plenty of friends whom use windows. But they don't complain as if there is No alternative.

Especially when the alternative is free.

And what learning curve is there to using a word processor,
A free word processor?

Or free versions of expensive music programs, modelling, etc. That costs thousands for Windows.

That is insane.

I program for windows. I write algorithms for software companies. But I do it on Linux.

I am not saying it is for everyone.
But stop whining at the foibles of Windows if you aren't even prepared to use something different and free.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Huddle up everyone.

The major problem with windows other than it being an inferior OS is its unfair trade practices.

Can we say Ma Bell and her monopoly.

The Bell System was the system of companies, led by the Bell Telephone Company and subsequently by AT&T, which provided telephone services to much of the United States and Canada from 1877 to 1984, at various times as a monopoly. In 1984, the system was broken up into independent companies by a U.S. Justice Department mandate. -wiki

Same thing has happened with Microsoft. Too big for their britches.

Microsoft's unfair trade practices stagnate progress. Linux' main problem was GUI drivers for the X-Windows system. That will no longer be a problem as of this year with Ubuntu's intro of Mir.

This is why so many viruses are targetted at windows. Its a hate for all things Microsoft and their unfair trade practices that hinder technological growth. Third party countries are voicing their dismay at the monopoly. Viruses speak for them.

If not for the break up of a similarly adopted unfair aggressive policy by Ma Bell and AT&T you wouldn't have a cellphone, or pagers.

Windows is an inferior OS. Plain and simple. It is bloated, insecure, unsecure, inefficient, and runs only on one platform...intel.

Linux runs on just about any CPU in existence. This is why android exists. Which is just a stripped down optimized version of Linux. A desktop version of windows will never run on a resource constrained handheld. Too much bloat. Much of the spaghetti code is patches, workarounds, fixes.

I mostly use Linux but I get the impression that lots of UNIX/Linux geeks take pride in being obscure to show how smart they are.

Windows stuff is often easier to use but you probably won't have a clue what a wizard is actually doing. If it doesn't do what it is supposed to or what you want it can be just as difficult as Linux, maybe more so.

They both kind of stink but smell different. But each different version of Windows stinks differently.

You're ascribing a much more sophisticated motive to people who write viruses deserve. Windows has 90.72% of desktop OS market share while Linux has 1.21% (as of February 2014, from Net Applications). Windows provides the biggest target. It's the same reason Macs rarely got viruses for so long, small target.

You also completely ignored the business arguments for why Windows is used.

Donnachaidh wrote:Yes, because things like this are always black and white. Clearly Linux can do everything Windows can better, faster, and cheaper.

By the way, how do you handle user file permissions in multi-thousand user network environments in Linux? It's rather easy with Windows...

cthia wrote:And yes, Linux is superior. Period.

By the way, as I stated, the capability to handle the kinds of file permissions you speak of was easy peasy even back in 1969, the first Unix. It is one of the most powerful features of Linux.

Just drop down to the command line and in less than 25 characters, or even less, can do what you ask, and even change the groups of the files, rename, delete. All in a one line command. And I wouldn't even have to boot into GUI. I could do it from a text boot. No mouse needed. You'd still be booting and clicking and I have shut down.

Linux is a powerful OS. Very powerful. It's just the way it is. I didn't develop Unix/Linux, so I am not taking credit for that. But I sure can enjoy using it and reaping the benefits of its power.

Windows simply cannot compete in a power contest. Heck, in this day and age Windows continues to suffer a 4GB file limit. Are you kidding me? I cannot copy a file that is larger than 4GB!!! And you call yourself a serious OS?

Linux has a max filesize limit as well...32TB!

Beginning to feel the power?

Yes windows is a bigger target. Because it is an easier target. It is easy to hack it! It is easy to exploit it. Why do you think there are so many updates and patches every single day sometimes???

And yes, a majority of viruses are foreign borne!
Not all, but most. Heck, so many that it was once speculated that foreigners, and I won't call any names were exploiting windows as easy as ABC123 and then selling us antivirus software! Ever wonder why the best virus companies are foreign?? It's their viruses they are fighting!

And just to make it clear. Because of the permissions and SU hierarchy it is virtually impossible to CODE viruses for Linux!

Most Linux users don't even have an antivirus program installed on their machines. Does that tell you anything?

Why do you think it enjoys the reputation as the most secure OS in the world.

That's why there are no viruses written for it.
Useless code is a waste of time.

Just please do me a favor. If you ever get elected for President, please don't change the WOPR defense computer over to windows...please?

I am begging!

Also Donna the world's first engineered virus warfare was against Iran's nuclear fuel enrichment program.

It was only possible because of the easiness to exploit windows. If the Iranians would have been running Linux it would not have been possible!

There's a hacker's book you really should read. I'll post its whereabouts if you like.

Oh, and Macs didn't get viruses because OS/2 is essentially linux as well! Just specialized, optimized and made proprietary.

Unix/Linux users have no problem using Macs. Essentially the same, mostly.

What's ironic is if people were given an ultimatum, to chose which OS would be eternally banished, but also given a list what would be lost.

Linux wins hands down.

Would you give up the internet? Linux based.
Would you give up your cell phone? Which I am going out on a limb and guessing...yep, Linux based. Whether it's an iphone or an android.

All of your gadgets at home...Linux based. Windows won't run on small tv cpu chips, or remote controllers, or thermostat controllers, etc. etc. etc.
