A good example would be Ginger Lewis, she will never command a warship, but if she does get command it will be a an auxiliary like a repair ship or depot ship.

I disagree.
We don't know what sort of training and experiences she has had between the times we saw her "on stage". Maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong; I'm just saying we don't know.

(I would appreciate more Ginger Lewis stories! hint hint!!!)

There are too many good quotes for me to pick one right now, but the two that I'd quickly "second" would be:
- White Haven's "Stupider" comment and
- A. Terekhov's (sp?) "ruthless" phrases.

You don't think Ginger has command potential?
She exudes leadership.

For some reason I have a very tender heart for her and Carolyn Wolcott.

Exudes leadership, yes. But can she execute tactical command in a battle situation when the missiles are flying? Does she have what it takes to command a Queen's ship under enemy fire?

She's a brilliant engineer and an outstanding head of department, but there's more to being a captain than the ability to lead people, and we don't know a thing about her tactical ability.

...but...but...but

She served under Honor Harrington.
She turns 'em out in job lots.

Estelle Matsuko has more leadership ability than anyone short of Manticore's Queen and Haven's President, but I still wouldn't put her in the captain's chair of a Queen's warship. Not everyone has a gift for tactics.

Besides, why would you deprive the engineering department of one of its greatest assets? :D

Awww, Estelle Matsuko. She has pieces of my heart.
I sure hope she and Honor work together again. That was such a brilliant union.

Back on balance...Yes she is a brilliant engineer and you have a point there.

But something you must know...Honor was brilliant at tactical and I really, really didn't want her to leave that slot.

Same goes for our favorite tac witch. I didn't want her to leave that slot.

*protective snarl* Dame Estelle and her admiral are mine and you keep your hands off them.

 *cough*

That is. Mine?

I didn't want Naomi to leave Tactical, either, but look how much they've managed to accomplish! :D

If you are looking at command suitability vs. career track for someone like Ginger Lewis, don't forget about Samuel Webster - and look at his train of thought in HAE when he's talking with his TO.

Roseandheather.
But that's my point about Ginger dear.
We love her at Engineering but we have to let her go.
I think she shall surprise us.

But you are right of course. Leadership ability doesn't in itself make a Captain.

Can we share Estelle and Honor?

Honor, yes. (Actually, you can have her - I've got my hands full as it is.)

But Estelle and Augustus are mine. *snatches*
