Everyone and their mother knows about my deep and undying love for Eloise Pritchart, Augustus Khumalo, Estelle Matsuko, Tom Theisman, Javier Giscard, and Sonja Hemphill by now, but I also love "Grayson granite" Abigail Hearns to itty, bitty pieces.
Every time she shows up I want to cheer. I love that she kept her hair long, I love that it took her awhile to get used to beating up on people hand-to-hand, I love her modesty, I love her tactical acumen, and I love that she's openly and unabashedly religious. So many science fiction novels seem to treat religion as a silly fantasy; this is one of the few 'verses that doesn't, and Abigail Hearns is a prime example of that.
I also love, love, love Michael Oversteegen. I love his accent, his sense of humor, his incredible honor, the way he can put words together, his style of command, the way he'll do whatever it takes to keep his crew safe... watching him chew Grigovakis out, without ever raising his voice, was a thing of pure beauty.
