I'm also enjoying reading the series, although some of the handwavium is a bit over the top. Strange to see after how rigorously the Honorverse is constructed.
The optical sensor aspect does have a couple of things going for it though. Firstly for Purposes of Plot it is handy, as the tension rises waiting for the light speed information to arrive to let you know if the other half of your fleet still exists or was destroyed hours ago, and when you exit a jump point you have access to information about the system you've entered but they don't know you are there for hours. The other aspect is that it may be believable when you consider how rapidly optical astronomy has improved over the past decade or so. Without FTL any active radar searches would take twice as long.

But the fleet actions are silly at best... ^^

The sensors employed are hilarious. They are relying on passive sensors to observe what's going on. Well, okay, same goes for the Honorverse, where's the difference? For once, those passive sensors can literally look from one side of the star system to the other. To such a degree that they are able to distinguish different ships of the same class over a distance of light hours. And how do those sensors work? They are optical.

I hesitate to suggest this as the "Aliens" are all or once were human, but Elizabeth Moons Trading Danger series has some nasty "Aliens" also gives the idea of Mercenary Naval forces and Pirate or Privateer force setup. Lots of Space combat.

There are also Peter F Hamilton's books. His description of the Prime and the Silfen is amazing and the Prime are, well, xenophobic and hostile beyond belief.

If you want this series, start with Pandora's Star, then read Judas Unchained, followed by the Void Trilogy.

Currently reading the latest in Taylor Anderson's Destroyerman series (Storm Surge). While the xenophobic, conservative, hostile aliens are derived from an alternative Earth, they fit the bill. As with all these books it is very well written and also gets the bootstrapping tech geek totally on board. I'm just past the point where Silva uses his new 25mm Doom Whomper to discourage a 5 ton allosaurus.

Only point I would query is the promotional blurb on the front cover. "I cannot recommend Taylor Anderson too highly", David Weber. Now I know from elsewhere what he means, but I have memories of writing staff appraisals along the lines of "I cannot recommend Joe Blogs very highly for promotion". Translation "Oxygen thief".

Mike Sheperd's Kris Longknife series is OK as long as you just read it as a fun story.

David Brin's Uplift series fit this bill. Humans stumble into a billion year old culture that spans multiple galaxies. Not only is this culture conservative, and vastly more powerful than Humanity, but many of its member species have religious and ideological problems with the existence of humanity.

Passive optical sensors can have pretty amazing performance if properly designed and deployed. With our current technology, we use passive optical sensors to detect planets hundreds of light years away...

As for hostile, xenophobic aliens, perhaps the reason no alien race has contacted us yet is WE are the hostile, xenophobic species.

Humans are immune to all known forms of "Halting Problem Attacks", which makes us invincible! ;)

The Galactic Marines series by Ian Douglas is a very good, very technical series. It's divided up into three trilogies (each focusing on a different time period). Admittedly, you don't get live aliens until the second trilogy, and the big bad xenophobic aliens don't become a major plot point until the last book in the second trilogy, but I would still recommend reading them in order to avoid spoilers.

waiting for February 18th (LAMA), I've just finished another ones of DW's one-shots: The Excalibur Alternative.

And franky I find the setting tempting and thrilling. So... do any of you know other books in which humans stumble into a hostile galaxy, full of technological advanced but cultural stagnating aliens? And have to defend themselves against juggernaut? :)

Please please write a sequel to "The Excalibur Alternative"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More on turning the tables:

Joe Haldeman's "Forever War" has the Humans as the bad guys (only revealed by the post humans at the end of the novel).

Jerry Pournelle's "War World" and Co-Dominium stories and novels have the post Human Saurons as the hostile alien race.

Greg Bear's "Eon" has a hostile alien species called the "Jart",but it is problematic if the post human "Geshels" are more dangerous to humanity (the Jarts turn out to be an existential threat to everything in the Universe...)

And the mechanical/AI aliens on Gregory Benford's "Galactic Centre" series of novels are certainly xenophobic to biological life.
