Go out to the "FORUMS" menu item and then find it immediate above the Forum lists as "User Control Panel". Hope this helps.

Sounds like plan. For what is worth, I have an interest in the industrial revolution as the county in England I grew up in supplied the raw material and manufacturing know how to fuel it. Coal, iron ore, limestone all played a part in Cumberland (now known as Cumbria) plus sugar, rum and wool either for domestic consumption or export made Cumbrian ports very profitable. Trivia point - Whitehaven remains as far as I know, the only English or indeed European port raided by the USN (founded by John Paul Jones, who was familiar with Whitehaven by the way) that wasn't occupied by an invader.

And would anyone care to guess [he asked innocently] why Honor Harrington's main squeeze is Hamish Alexander, Earl Whitehaven?

I am amazed and astounded that anyone could hide an "easter egg" 20 years ago and have the patience not to mention it until now.
AND I have no idea why he's the Earl of Whitehaven

Hello RunsForCelery!

That's cool! 8-)

But it missed me even after reading about John Paul Jones' raid on Whitehaven, I knew he was familiar with the port, but didn't make that connection, other than 'that's curious' and thought it too obscure.

RFC wouldn't do something like that, would he? :D

Talk about buried deep in plain sight, not seeing the obvious...

There's a polish card game that translates as "he who doesn't see" displayed cards -referenced in "Escape from Colditz", that might be applicable if I played card games and polish ones in particular. ;)

Hi RFC, thanks for the reply - what an Easter Egg!!

Some years ago, in order to drum up some tourist trade (now one of the areas biggest employers, apart from the nuclear reprocessing plant down the road at Sellafield), the town bigwigs decided to hold a 'forgive and forget' ceremony for that little brouhaha, invited the USN to attend, and made sure there was lots of press coverage.

Anyway, here's a website for a potted synopsis of the event;

As to the premise of the thread, I currently reside in Kent, about 30 miles SE of London.

Hi Bodrules

I lived two years in the London area, first in Eltham (London SE9) then near Bromley (Kent) in a home owned by a Mr Lawton, his wife, five children (all boys) and another couple who were (like my wife and I and our infant daughter) renting space on the third level of the house.

The Lawtons had a handy-man who cleaned the house every day, worked in the garden tending plants and flowers, and who I saw doing a 'valve job' on Mr Lawton's Bentley.

He was on the garage floor surrounded with engine parts.

When he sensed my presence, the first thing he said was "Don't move anything".

'Tom' was the handy-man's name.

What was interesting was that Tom was blind.

On a good day, he could distinguish light from dark.

Around 10 am, every day, Tom used to visit my wife and I and ask her to come down to check the main living room to see if he had missed any of the many many toys the boys had left scattered about (including behind the furniture) the night before.

She never found any toys that he had missed.

Then he would ask us if we could prepare him a cup of tea !!

We used to chat with Tom and discovered (among other things) that he had only a few years of formal education.

One of the lessons I learned from this experience was that formal schooling was not the only place we learn.

It was a very good lesson for a 23-year-old somewhat snobbish University graduate to learn.

I now live back in my birth country of Canada near it's capital city Ottawa.

Hi Kbus888,

That's a great lesson to learn, especially during the college years.

I spent a couple of years in England in the '70's, mainly in in Surrey or Brighton East Sussex, and visited parts of nearby Kent such as Bromley (that near Croydon) and as far east as East Grinstead more often besides visiting Chartwell, Tunbridge Wells, and the preserved RDF Chain Home station but missed Dover.

England was/is beautiful, as is Canada.

Best regards always,

L
