You have to be very, very close to have any physical effect. Like a few KMs.

well jthomas, 1 Mt of tnt equals 4.184 times 10^15 joules, so 20MT is 8.368 times 10^16 joules. assuming you want to count a noticeable physical effect as moving say 2 kilos/metre cubed of mass to 1 m/s sideways (reasonably small numbers for this calc), then you need 2 joules per kilo. so an energy density of 2 joules/metre cubed is required.

area of a sphere is 4/3 pi r cubed, so 4.184 times 10^16 metres square in area. divided by 4/3pi equals 9.98856 times 10^15. cube root equals 99,961.8, or round about 100km. so not that far away, as space goes, assuming all my numbers are right.

Doesn't that break the 'triple ripple'? If I'm remembering correctly that technique was based on waves of nuclear detonations frying sensors at a distance.

Darn! I tried to be careful with my calculations. I said that the missiles of the Fearless were a little less than half the 160 ton missiles from Blackbird base. Then I accidentally went ahead and used 160 tons for my calculations. The mass of the ship missiles (at least the ones from the Fearless) are half that. This drops the brightness in my calculation by almost 1 magnitude. That makes the explosions apparent magnitude 3 on Grayson, about the brightness of Orion's belt.

Didnt it work by overloading and confusing the sensors, and just preventing lock on?

Not at all. What the 'triple ripple' relies on is the impact of radiation and charged particles (ions) to induce failures in the sensors. Recall that the warheads in the 'triple ripple' were the dirtiest (as in creating the most radioactive 'fallout') they could make.

All this for something that was only mentioned in another, later book. Some flashes of light that rfc stated were seen by Abigail (Abagail?). If that scene is even in the movie, just remember it was not in HoQ, and all the calculations to prove or disprove its possibility, etc. are moot as moot can be: it was whatever the author says it was. But it was fun reading the stuff. A bit beyond an old software engineer's capability, but fun.

While the astronomical properties of thermonuclear explosions are indeed fascinating (and no, I'm not being sarcastic, I actually am fascinated by it), I have to admit that should HotQ come out in 3D, I won't be going to see it in that format.
This is not due to any philosophical reasons or quibbles about the "pop-up" effects, it's just that watching 3D films etc for over 15 minutes or so gives me one heck of a headache that could be mistaken for a migraine.
Therefore, I have two questions to ask.
1) Will it be released in 2D format as well as 3D at the cinema?
2) Do any other WeberFans suffer from the same migraine-induction side-effects of 3D films?
As for the starship design, I think that the easiest way to show differing star-nation navies is probably going to be the shape of the hammerhead. Would Solarian ships have dome-like hammerheads as compared to the blocky Haven ones?
