However, I think it's going to be a lot harder to not have any "death race" flashing around the screen if/when Honorverse ships get into energy range of one another or the laser clusters opened fire against incoming missiles. It's not all simply move magic madness, either.

But because of who and what you are, you understand that lasers will be invisible in vacuum. ... For them to make the connection between the active defenses and the disintegrating missile coming in on Fearless, they'll have to see the connection, and that means, I fear, that we will see lasers and grasers streaking across the screen. For that matter, you may even see ionized "wakes" following ships around at high rates of speed. ...

Visible, STL, energy weapons fire is an acceptable break from reality. One of the smart things Roddenberry did was change from 'laser' to 'phaser' — who can say it doesn't work like that?

On casting I feel its important not to "White wash" the cast. Keeping the Queen, Ramirez, Mike Henke in the future, and others as close as possible to how there described in the books. I know changes are going to happen, always do no matter what book you turn into a movie, but a big feel for me in the Honor universe is how all different types of people mix easily is a big part of my enjoyment. Removing that mix would weaken it for me, and make possible later movies weaker if we get to dealing with the Alignment.

I have to second this post in its entirety. Science fiction in general and film in general are very white- and male-dominated media, and the fact that the Honorverse bucks both these trends is part of what makes it so awesome. In its day, Star Trek TOS was progressive just for having Nichelle Nichols as a bridge officer; for a 21st century film... well, I'll just quote WEB du Havel from Crown of Slaves: "Today's universe assigns [Henke] to command navies, and doesn't even think about it."

On the topic of Mike Henke, perhaps she and Alice Truman could be combined for the films?

Ninety minutes is the target for the first screenplay, because they always grow. I'm anticipating that the final movie will actually be in the 2-hour range.

Wow! That's great news. :)

Thank you for this information. (And I certainly hope for some "real" 3D-camera action instead of upconverting - but apparently, Evergreen Films has some connections to James Cameron, therefore... one can hope :D )

In regards to fleet combat, or long range combat in general, I keep thinking about one scene out of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda. Just looked it up. It was the battle of Samsarra, and while the captain is talking you can see the display over his shoulder. It goes from a very wide view, with a single icon for the enemy fleet. Then it zooms in very smoothly to show all the units in that fleet. They managed to both display the enemy ships, and that they were light minutes away, in the space of perhaps three seconds, without taking away screen time from the actor.

Not very well. We first see Alice as a light cruiser commander in her own right in HotQ and if Mike was there -- whether replacing Alice or Honor's exec at the time -- as the Queen's cousin she'd have had a much more prominent role whether she wanted to or not. Besides, she needs to be Honor's exec in SVW, and if she's Honor's exec in HotQ, then she gets promoted.

Just a couple of thoughts:

One, while like the rest I agree with the HotQ being a better choice, there is no reason they can't borrow something of the spirit of OBS--which was a new captain with a crew that could have gone either way (good or bad) and how they came together under her leadership (and it might not be a bad idea to start with McKeon as her exec, rather than Troubador's commander, to establish the dynamic from OBS). Just a thought.

Two, whoever plays the role and whatever the scriptwriter writes, I would recommend that they memorize these words from one Lieutenant Commander Samuel Houston Webster spoken in the SVW:

"In that case, Admiral, all I can say is that she's the best," he said finally. "We had some serious problems when they banished us to Basilisk, and the Captain— well, she dealt with them, Sir, and I never heard her raise her voice once while she did it. You know what Basilisk Station used to be like, and we weren't exactly the best crew anyone ever gave a captain, either. Not when we arrived. But, by God, Admiral, we were when we left!"

.....

"The Captain gets the best out of her people—sometimes more than they ever guessed they could give—and I don't really think it's anything she does. It's who she is, Sir. You trust her. You know she'll never let you down, and when the shit hits the fan, you know she'll get you out of it if anyone can. I'm a com officer, not a tac specialist, but I saw enough in Basilisk to realize how good she really is. I don't know if you've been briefed on just how BuShips butchered our armament, Admiral, but we were so far out of our league it was pitiful. We all knew that from the start, but the Captain took us in anyway. The Peeps smashed us into a wreck, Sir—three-quarters of our people were dead or wounded, but she kept right on coming, and somehow she took them out. I don't know if anyone else could have done it, but she did."

......

"We blamed her for getting us sent to Basilisk when we first arrived. It wasn't her fault, but that didn't change the way we felt, and it showed. But by the time it all broke loose, we would have followed her into Hell. In fact, I guess that's just about what we did . . . and we'd do it again."

Because that is the Honor I for one want to see portrayed.
