Welcome to the forums Catbytes, We police ourselves mostly, as can be seen Fly and I have removed the link with X rated photos, Spacekiwi will as soon as he wakes up in New Zealand. Say something to the nice midshipman Mange. Hey Mange you are only supposed to Snark at Admirals not Midshipmen. Poker & Mange PS y'all is the proper contraction for youall. Thanks for the welcome (and to KNick too). I was just pickin at ya before. Moon Bloodgood looks a bit swollen in the current episodes of Falling Skies, she recently gave birth. RE-PS: I don't use the contraction form of "you all" when speaking. Just "yall". In my post, i was referring only to those multiple people involved, not ALL people in the forum. "Yall" can be more limited in scope and/or more personal than you-all. I reserve "yall" for that function. **** An English/Math teacher once told me English spelling is "logical" when i complained that it isn't. My thought was to wonder if we would have gotten past chunking spears if math was as logical as English spelling. Hard to believe i used to use perfect punctuation. Typos - my keyboard did it. . |

Eric Flint had a few interesting (and true) things to say about the English language. (Paraphrasing) 1) It was a language created in English tavern as Norman nobels attempted to woo Saxon barmaids 2) English is a language which chases other languages into dark alleys, mugs them and rifles through their pockets for loose Grammer. English is the most messed up language out there- It's so flexible that it's rules are not just meant to be broken, they are intended to be outright ignored in some cases, but no one will tell you exactly when those cases are until after the fact - and even then Scholars will be debating it for years. ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |

This one I must strongly disagree with. It doesn't chase them into dark alleys. It commits armed robbery in full view of all. And like any other crime, the eye witnesses can't agree on what happened after the fact. _

So much for the topic. Movie, remember? Lead character, remember? But as long as we are there, English is a Germanic language, modified by 1066 French, with words borrowed and mispronounced and misspelled from from every language which has a handy word, from Japanese to Yiddish (another Germanic language, but written backwards). It is probably the richest language on the planet. But Honor only speaks English, and thank goodness rfc did not try to muck things up like he did in the Safehold books. |
