In Off Armageddon Reef didn't Merlin set a decoy on a remote island that showed a town with advanced technology and broadcasting radio waves? What happened to this decoy?

Nothing like that in any of the books.
In a later book, Merlin created fake steam vehicles on a remote island to test if the orbital platform would react to steam power. Since there was no reaction, I suspect Merlin shut down the faked steam vehicles test. *

? The only decoy operation I remember was in a later book ... checking ... _How Firm a Foundation_, where Merlin set up a phony set of cities that used simulated steam engines (on a very remote set of islands). ----------------------------

Ah! I didn't remember it correctly then. It has been a few years since I read that book.

But it does sort of beg the question of, having done it once with steam what's wrong with trying the same approach ie use part of Armageddon Reef or a remote, uninhabited island to set up a fake electrical installation and see what happens? I guess an answer could be in the "there is a problem with the bombardment system controls" story line, being afraid of causing a reset, but it would seem worth a try.

Simple answer: Charis needed Stearn. They do not need Electricity -- yet. .

Um just a thought....why not make a bunch of electrical generator decoys and place them all over uninhabited islands and turn them on one at a time. If the orbit defense system has a limited ammo supply you could run it dry also you could have Owl watching the orbitals and track the platforms if by no other way then the angle of impact from projectile.

Last time this was suggested, Himself responded to the effect of 'what makes you think the ammo can't be replenished?'

There is also textev that they are reloadable platforms. Granted, there is a *short-term* ammo limit. If the defenses and the bombardment platform were one and the same (they aren't, very much obviously aren't actually) then that could have been a way to create a window to get other weapons in range to blow the platforms up. Short of that, this is a nonstarter. |

He also confirmed in another thread that the OBS is maintained automatically, ie bots repair, refuel and rearm it as needed. --- Jack of all trades and destructive tinkerer. Anyone who have simple solutions for complex problems is a fool. |
