So Safeholdian Dragons are bigger, stronger and breed faster than elephants, can get a good turn of speed and are more thoroughly domesticated than elephants. Why, therefore, has nobody in Safehold got it into his mind to get a dragon, cover him in a lot of chainmail, put a Howda on his back and put five or so arbalestiers or musketeers in said howda to have it run around the battlefield squishing the people on the other side and having the Howda based crossbowmen/musketeers shooting enemy soldiers for good measure?

i believe the reason is that dragons like combat even less than elephants of our world did as they seem to freak out much faster than horses or other animals aka they are really skittish around weapon fire and when they get hurt they go berserk and they kill anyone and everyone indiscriminately.

And in the current environment, even an armored dragon is going to be little more than a big target for massed rifles and artillery... to say nothing of mortars, rockets, etc etc..

It might have been a good idea before the invention of gunpowder though...

"Oh bother", said Pooh as he glanced through the airlock window at the helmet he'd forgotten to wear.
