Hi I am thinking that it would be nice if we could get the metric system back into use on safehold. So lets discus how that could be made to happen
here is my idea: Have someone at the royal college or the imperial measurements thing introduce it and then have it be pushed to public use. |

Are you going to have a Safehold Metric system? Introduce the Old Earth Metric System? And how many Old earth Centimeters would there be in a Safehold Centimeter? |

I am thinking about introducing the earth metric system as is mostly just because i personally greatly prefer the metric system and it makes life easier for measurements so basicly the metric system as it is today

Hmm basically Merlin by introduction Arabic Numerals just gave the Base 10 foundation of the metric system it's birth. But remember most of Safehold still writes 15 as XV. Like all things it will take a while. Meanwhile we have the old system alive and well and the introduction of the standard inch, ounce ect will allow interchange ability.
Until Arabic Numerals are in general use explaining why the metric system is worth the trouble of changing what you grew up with will be impossible. So How do you sell it Royal fiat perhaps? Poker CPO Poker Mind and, Mangy Fur the Smart Alick Spacecat.

Not going to happen. Hawsman(sp?) has laready introduced standardized measurements and that can be expanded to a decimalized, universal measurement system. It won't be related to Earth/TF Metrics, but it will serve the same purpose. Even that is going to be in the future, beyond the current story arc. .

IIRC, the original definition of a meter was to be one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole, which would make it a bit oddly sized for Safehold.
(Also IIRC, when the meter was standardized, and the Earth was measured more precisely, the meter was found to be slightly off in size.) Another solution would be to convert Safehold to a base 12 numbering system, which would allow the existing foot and inch to function as the basis of a new metric system. (Although now that I think about it, do we have confirmation that there are 12 Safehold inches in a Safehold foot?) |

The charms of the metric system, beyond irritating fuddy-duddies, are three: 1) A tidy decimal basis 2) Interrelatedness of different types of measurement: length, mass, force, etc. 3) Being indexed to Earth, originally (3) is moot on Safehold. It'd amount to being purely arbitrary, or a giveaway for any hypothetical observer that some remnant of Terrestrial history was a live influence. (1) and (2) you can get and probably will on the basis of any standards for basic units that dig in and take off. The Delthak inch, for instance, is likely to fill in for the meter in terms of role in Safehold's decimal measurement system of the future. (Or, if things go the other way, the St. Kylmahn inch, perhaps.) |

I suspect that at least in the EOC that arabic numerals are in widespread, if not universal use. Introduce metric in manufactories where precision is critical and otherwise let it coexist with the old system like it still does in the USA. No point in a major fracas over it. For the people for whom it is most useful, it will catch on pretty fast. Also, see to it that it is introduced in school for the kids. That will also help over time. You missed the big reason it was accepted by so much of Europe and a major reason it has never been accepted in the US. When introduced it was not the other guys standard unit. Some of the fun can be found in anecdotes written in the book Measuring America. |

IIRC it was noted in OAR the old English system was used coming directly from Holy Langhorn The big problem is different bases, in angles 360 degrees weight 16 oz to the pound, 12 inches to one foot yada yada, time 24 hours to a day 60 minuits to one hour etc remain. You will note the metric system did not introduce metric angles thus even the metric system is a mixed bag of bases. Yep a centiday is 14.4 old time minuites.
