There is another thread here where kites were mentioned, and in my curiosity, I poked around for records of man-lifting kites being used in warfare.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-lifting_kite

In our world, the technology for airplanes and zeppelins pretty much cut kites for observation off at the knees, before they really got anywhere. On Safehold, especially in the Navy, I can see potential for an extreme interest in man-lifting kites.

How do kites have anything to do with Boy Scouts?

Baden Fletcher Smyth Baden-Powell was one of the pioneers of man-lifting kitebuilding. Some of you might recognize the last name.

Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell was his brother, and the founder of the Boy Scouts.

While I am not yet fully caught up in the books yet, I do not recall seeing any evidence of social programs taken from history that the Empire of Charis might benefit from.

The nobility in a society like Safehold's might potentially learn a great deal of what the Scouts teach, but the common folk would not. Their exposure to things military would typically start when they enter the military. Granted, they lived hard lives by our standards, but not military lives.

I would think that the first Safehold resident poking through Owl's records and finding a reference to the Boy Scouts would be stunned by the potential, especially considering their manpower shortages.

Researching man-lifting kites could be how someone stumbles across the boy Boy Scouts, through cross-references of the Baden-Powells like what one finds in modern day Wikipedia.

It's entirely possible that DW might have already introduced something like the Boy Scouts to Safehold, but if he hasn't, I think it would be fun to see the reactions of the main characters to the idea, and how it develops, especially when the idea of Girl Scouts gets brought up.

I just realized that a scouting program would also allow soldiers and seamen who were severely injured to the point of being incapable in the field to still contribute to the war effort by being scout leaders, as long as their minds were still intact. This could even earn them a salary from the government.

It's a little more military-oriented than we see the scouts today, but if you look into the history of scouting, it's not too terribly far off from reality. Even as recently as twenty years ago, an Eagle Scout was automatically raised to rank of E-3 in the US Army, with no other requirements. From what I can see, this is still an existing policy.

Let us suppose that the "Boy Scouts of Charis" are formed, following Baden-Powell's prescriptions.

Then, human nature being as it is, there are bound to be those "Socialists" and "Pacifists" who feel that the scouts are too militaristic and will rush off to form their equivalent of the "Woodcraft Folk"!

somehow I wouldn't have thought that there would be that many pacifists in Charis, given what fate has been declared/threatened/promised/intended for them by Clyntahn!

As I said, Human Nature is bound to have thrown up such contrarians!

Human Nature can throw up such contrarians but Charis would need two or three decades of "we're completely safe" before such contrarians are "allowed" by public opinion.

Boy scouts could eventually lead to something similar to the salvation army. Hard to call an army dedicated to charity work and taking care of the needy. also. it would be a way to encourage women equality as they cant object to them doing charity work that way.

say a steam ship was going full ahead, could it pul a kite with a man attached, he could see alot if he reached high enough.

Indeed. Something a lot like parasailing.
