I have recently been rereading the series, and in the lead up to the first battle (at the crossing) there is a description of the marines sniper rifles. It is mentioned that one of the models is of a bullpup design. How is this possible in a flint-lock weapon? wouldn't having the mechanism that close to the shooters head and face be highly likely to cause blindness and/or set their hair and ears on fire? Just curious.

??Have a shaped shield that directed the flash away from the shooter's face??

Otherwise, I don't know... Maybe some of our techies aboard have a better idea...

They would probably have two ways to avoid the flash. A shield as previously mentioned and having the cock mounted on the side away from the firer's face instead of being top mounted.

Flint locks are already offset to the side.

Yeah, but what if you are left-handed?

Put the gun to your other shoulder and firmly close the non-aiming eye...

Safehold is a primitive conformist society you will be right handed or the Church has a nice chared stake for you ;)

Left handed flint locks were made in our time line, and double barreled fowling pieces had both a right and left lock for each barrel. Of note a Scottish pastor's ire at the flash allowing fowl to evade his shots developed the first percussion lock, the perfume bottle lock :o Later the percussion cap was invented so you did not have to carry grains of fulminate of mercury about, an accident waiting to happen ;)
