Hello all,
I have been wondering the past view months what the fate of Princess Zhanayt, Caylebs younger sister, will be. She should be around seventeen Safeholdian years at the moment so approaching marriageable age. Besides a dark hint that not all marriages will be happy when Zhan is betrothed to Mahrya and a reference to her parrot we hear little to nothing about her. Any ideas? |

Welcome and good question. Not sure if this is a spoiler Zhanayt has been holding down the Fort in Tellesburg and her fate is in Caleb's hands. He is absent so she is senior in the household when Sharly is gone. RFC should deal with this in HFQ - she is likely to tie another realm to Charis but which one?? I am not young enough to know everything!

It can't be Siddermark since that's an elected position of leadership, not a hereditary one. Perhaps one of the Empires/kingdoms in South Howard. Possible the kingdom of Dohlar or Sodar, or the Empire of Desnarian might be tied by marriage to IC after they are seized or cut off from control of the CoG (and after letting the populous see how brutal and cruel the Inquisition really is.)

Charis doesn't NEED to secure another important ally. Corisande was a problem because they had to defeat it militarily. By marrying into the House of Daikyn and saving his obvious beloved wife from death, Hektor proved that Charis truly wanted integration not subjugation.
Every other ally Charis has burned their bridges with the CoGA or had Clyntahn burn it for them. Siddermark, Tarot, Chisholm and Emerald must win with Charis or die with her. What other nation is out there that needs marriage as an inducement to allying with Charis in its life and death struggle? I don't think there is such a nation. Silkiah will seek integration with Siddermark if it wishes to engage in stronger relations with the Allies. Dohlar? Not a chance of integrating with Charis after the mega case of whoop-arse about to be applied to it by a rather vengeful ICN and ICA. Delfahrahk and Sodar....why bother even at a much smaller price? I believe that Zhanet can pursue a profession of sorts. She can be the image of Charis in Old Charis when the Monarchs are away just as the Queen Mother is such an image in Chisholm. Whom or if she marries might end up largely under her control with no great need to change that. |

I do not think Silkiah will seek integration with Siddermark. Why would it? The Grand Duchy of Silkiah has an aristocratic form of government which can identify much more closely with Charis. The hereditary rulers of Silkiah will be looking to their future through dynastic lens. The recent unpleasantness of their territories being used as a freeway by the Desnarian Empire will be foremost in their thoughts. They will seek alliances but blood is thicker then ink and words. A marriage alliance with Charis would enhance the security of the people of Silkiah. But that same alliance will bolster the prestige and security of the current ruling family in the FUTURE. Would the Grand Duchy seek integration with the Charisian Empire? Probably not. But there may be incentives or factors which we are unaware of which will push the issue one way or the other. |

What about the son of the head of the Raven Lords' council? It read like he was leaning more towards the reformist viewpoint although I suspect she'd be pretty bitter if she had to move up to the highlands... brrr.

I agree that there is no need at this point to marry Princess Zhanayt off for reasons of state. Nahrman Jr. does seem like a decent young man. What happens to her depends on how RFC decides to tell the story and whether or not he decides to tie up this particular end at all. I hope if he does, it is done in a manner that respects the princess and her wishes. I know that is how I would want my sister treated in that situation.

Tim,
The Treaty of Silk Town created Silkiah as a demilitarized independent Grand Duchy guaranteed by the CoGA. This happened some 50 years ago. Prior to the Treaty Siddermark had spent 150 years or so kicking the snott out of Desnair. One might suggest that much of the fighting occurred in Silkiah. That fact and the fierce dislike Silkiahns had of Desnairi might further suggest that in these prior 150 years from the treaty Silkiahns had become largely Siddermarkian. That the CoGA created an independent nation argues Silkiah WAS part of Siddermark or becomming so prior to the Treaty. |

The unpleasant fact that after the Treaty of Silk Town the duchy had to pay tribute to Desnair might also have something to do with that dislike. Don When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.
