Well this is not as precise as jgnfld military map on Siddarmark, it's more an overview of Charis status in the other countries, half year by half year (so every 5 months in Safehold ) to see how things progress over the years.
The legend is in the Legend file ! 890A is April YOG 890, 890S is september of YOG 890. I have omitted 2 dates where the map did not change from the preceding one. I have also omitted september YOG 896 and april (in fact march) YOG 897 to avoid spoiler issues, I have done them and will post it next in a special post with a big SPOILER on it. I've done this under GIMP, learning the tool as I worked. I preferred to cut on the dimensions, 27000*13500 was too much so I cut it down by 100 (10 each dimension, 2700*1350 px). Since these here are png exports, you loose the transparency with the infodump MTaT map which is the basis but for this kind of large scale map it's not a big problem. I have a lot of questions after doing this work. In particular, what is the limit of South Harchong? It includes clearly Queiroz, Kuznetsov and Schwei, but does it include Selkar, Myratha and Ashton which do not seem to be part of Delferahk nor Desnair ? The Duchy of Fallos seems to be independant and not a part of Tarot. But when Tarot gets into the EoC, it seems difficult for Fallos to stay at war with Charis so I have turned it neutral...there are a lot of other questions but ... here is the link https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B04yMg6FVAPOQWR1eVpNT2ZSN1k&usp=sharing |

Hello Braudel26,
Very well done. Can you provide some details of how you did it? Such craftsmanship should always be encouraged. So the rest of us might try to pitch in. I might quibble that the Duchy of Fallon is independent of Siddarmark, though not for long I suspect. L
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

[quote="lyonheart"]Hello Braudel26,
Very well done. Can you provide some details of how you did it? Such craftsmanship should always be encouraged. So the rest of us might try to pitch in. I might quibble that the Duchy of Fallon is independent of Siddarmark, though not for long I suspect. L 1) Technicalities : 1.1 I started from the Safehold MTaT map in infodump. 1.2 I imported that jpg in GIMP. 1.3 Since I was beginning in GIMP, I was working on a Macbook and response times were slow, I looked at the number of pixels which is huge on the infodump map to allow zooming, and reduced that as I said by a significant factor : 2700*1350 instead of 27000*13500 1.4 Since this map is my background, and I do not change it 1.5 I copied the background as a second layer and replaced the physical items by black for ground and white for sea, leaving only in green the boundaries between the political units. I was able to keep the subdivisions in Harchong and Siddarmark but not in Charis, Chisholm, Emerald and Corisande because the lowering of resolution in 1.3 led to difficulties for separating rivers, boundaries, and so on. 1.6 Then I copied this second layer as a third and erased the internal boundaries, kept only the big ones between big states (with the issue with the states in Howard continent Selkar Myratha Ashton which I left because I don't know if they are independant or parts of southern Harchong 1.7 Then I copied this third layer as a fourth, put transparency to 50% , deactivated all intermediate layers (in GIMP you only click on the eye of the layer so it disappears from the view while staying there and coming back when you click again on the eye) and left only the background layer so I could "feel" what I was doing and put a different color for each different status of countries in relation to Charis as of the beginning of OAR, before the Maynthal plot. 1.8 I then copied that layer, changed the countries status if it had changed between april and september 890 1.9 and so on 1.10 So I had this big xcf (gimp) file that I saved. I then activated (eye) separately each layer and for each exported to png (equivalent to jpg) and that gives the files I assembled in the links 2 Possible improvements 2.1 To be able to give a military view, you've got to do what jgnfld did, that is reduce the original map to the theater of operations. That way you have less pixels and so it's more manageable but you keep the ability to zoom without losing definition. 2.2 I did not put any transparency. I'll try and see what it gives if you put some, to have names appear for example 2.3 Seas : I wondered about showing "to whom belong the seas" on the same maps. The issue is it's much more moving than lands ownership 2.4 If anybody has any suggestion I'm for teamwork 3 Content issues 3.1 I've mentioned southern Harchong above 3.2 I've also mentioned Fallos. Fallos is clearly not a part of Siddarmark since it's a Duchy and no Republican state calls one of its parts a Duchy . The only time we see them they are actively selling their wood to the NoG, so they can be considered at war with Charis. However, I've changed their color to neutral after Tarot joined EoC, because Fallos is then surrounded by Charis, Emerald, Tarot, Siddarmark which is actively commercing with Charis, then officially an ally of Charis, and seas where the NoG has disappeared. So even if there are some privateers from Desnair, I don't see Fallos able to commerce with anybody, and so it would be suicidal for them to do anything active against Charis 3.3 Silkiah They are with Siddarmark highly commercing with Charis up to the Sword of Schuler. At that time (april 896) I've put them at cold war with Charis because they let the armies of Desnair go to the South March through their state (they don't have any choice). But then I've put them in red in September 896 because it's said at the beginning of LaMA the Go4 has decided to come back on the demilitarisation decided in 869 and to have them build weapons. 3.4 To simplify I've put in grey (uninhabited) some islands like Hammer or Samson or Windswept where there probably are some people but we don't know anything about them. Well if anybody can give me some info I'll take it ! |
