Come to think of it, the timing of Merlin's visit may have been set by the arrival of new instructions on whats-his-name the Intendant's desk.

So the issue of Dohlar's participation in the war should be resolved prior to that, putting both Thirsk and the officers beyond Clintahn's reach.
