I can well believe that. It's a question of where the damage is done. Artillery has the power to strike at long and medium range, and can cause horrendous casualties in troops massing for attack and in holding areas. But if enough survive to carry out the attack, once it starts, artillery is of limited use at close range – the last 50 to 100 yards or so of an actual assault. If enough of the opposition gets across that last space, then it's a case of "Goodnight Vienna . . ."
