While there might be a "Real" Seijin network, Aivah didn't call Merlin Seijin (or Major) in a private conversation with him in LAMA.

So the lack of "Seijin" here may only mean that they are on a first name basis.

tourist wrote:Here's a random thought, all of those old pre-Merlin Sejiin stories had to come from somewhere, so has Merlin's "sejiin network" just been busted by the REAL sejiin network? Note the absences of the commonly used sejiin references.

I'm not ready to being posting spoilers yet, and I won't be for quite some time, given how far I am from completing the book and the fact that I'm moving events around even in the portion I've already finished. Having said that, I decided to give you a tiny snippet.

-----------------------------------

Merlin Athrawes Chamber,
Charisian Embassy,
Siddar City,
Republic of Siddarmark.

The angry, shingle-lifting background bluster of snow-laden wind roaring about the eaves only made the sudden, profound silence in the modest bedchamber even more complete. The slight sound as a coal settled on the hearth seemed almost deafening, and Merlin Athrawes stood very still, shoulders against the door he’d just closed behind him, sapphire eyes gazing intently through the fire-flickered dimness at the slender woman in the single chair beside that hearth.

The woman who had just called him “Ahbraim.”

Which, he reflected, made the question of how she’d managed to get by the alert sentinels guarding the Charisian Embassy here in the heart of Siddar City rather secondary.

The firelight struck subdued highlights from her dark hair, and the heavy, utilitarian coat hanging from his coat tree — like the boots and heavy woolen stockings she’d slipped from slim, pedicured feet and set before the fire — was soaked with melting snow. She was quite possibly the most beautiful woman he’d ever met and he could smell the subtle sweetness of her perfume, but neither of those were what held him so still.

“Why,” he asked after a moment, in a tone which sounded considerably calmer than he actually felt, “did you call me that, Madam Pahrsahn?” He cocked his head, expression puzzled. “I assume it’s a reference to Master Zhevons?”

“You really are very good,” Aivah Pahrsahn — who had once been known as Ahnzhelyk Phonda, among many other names — said approvingly. “Why, you could almost — almost, I say — convince me. But you can’t, you know. I’ve been watching you for too long.”

Hi Pablopinzone,

We may have a different understanding of what she means by 'entire trip'.

To some that may mean just one way, to others both ways.

I understand her to be saying she needs to make the one way 5000 mile trip within "a day or so", not the two way journey, 'quickly' applies to both trips being as fast as possible, as she understands it though Merlin could get her there in 2-3 hours.

It's quite possible she somehow figured Merlin was Dialydd Mab (possibly she noticed his quick half-smile at the report of Rayno's efforts to find one Dialydd Mab that triggered a memory of Ahbraim smiling at some reference to Merlin and/or vice versa), and reckons that the journey half way to Zion and back in a single night means he can get her to Zion just as fast.

Until RFC graces us with another snippet with more detail, we're just going to have to wait.

Where does Aivah say she needs to make a round trip in a day?

Get to Zion in less than a day, yes; but nothing about returning so quickly.

Lyonheart, Thanks.

Here is what I read pp 583/584.
What she says
"I need you to get me into Zion and back again. Quickly."
...
"And 'quickly' means making the entire trip within the space of, oh a day or so."

To mean that means there and back in a day, although it could be a bit longer.
Any snippet or post from RFC is good if not great!

However you read it she wants to be back within two days of leaving, at most. Only operational reason I can come up with for that is that she expects to be bringing back some critical info only she can access.

Of course, someone who toasts her toes after walking up the street may just not fancy coming back from Zion the long way in winter. ;)

One might propose, recalling that she thinks Merlin is a human person, that she anticipates the possibility of needing to use certain traditional incentivization schemes of an athletic nature, loosely speaking, to convince Merlin to cooperate. She has now moved boots and leggings, cold damp leggings, out of the way. One might alternatively suggest that she may be in a cucture where pneumonia is a great killer of persons of advanced age such as herself in her 40s.

Real Sejin Networks!

Who were the real Sejins? I always felt that they were colonist who had been reeducated with NEATS. Various factions during the Archangles civil war would have needed soldiers and that is the easiest solution to get additional manpower I can see.

So after the war what happens to the leftovers? particularly if the wining side didn't have full data on who had been reeducated? And remember its not just Shan Wei's followers who were a part of the civil war. We only know there were factions within factions. With the writ as it stands now being the only record of who won and what their idologies/goals were.

So that brings us back to Avivah. If she is associated with a precursor Sejin remnant network for what side did those Sejin's work? The winners, a disident faction? Shan Wei's followers? Right now there are more questions and supposition than factual awnsers.

Which is of course why MWW(Mad Wizard Weber, which I think is more aplicable in this particular case) aka RFC (Runnsforcelery) left us with that cliffhanger in LAMA, and why he was probably either Gigling or Laughing Maniachally while he posted his latest snippet.

Cheers,

Hi Packhunter,

If we were to rank the endings of RFC novels, LaMA's is easily a top contender, right up there with "Oops!" from AoV and SoS's "Yours is the honor" -message ends'.

We have no textev hint of any kind she's part of any group that has any federation tech or tie via tradition etc.

Seijins still have a mysterious provenance, and the so called 'war of the fallen' leaves a lot details yet to be revealed, which we may get in the temple after HFQ.

Here's hoping.

The Forraker one is good, but you cannot beat the "Will there be a reply ?" at the end of Empire From The Ashes.

I think everyone is over-thinking this. Aivah is very familiar with the stories about Seijin, and clearly believes that Merlin is one. Since one capability that Seijins had was the ability to travel great distances quickly, she is hoping that he can do so with her. For all we know, there are tales of Seijin transporting people.

No need for knowledge of the Federation here, just a good understanding of Safehold's own traditions and mythology (not sure mythology is really the right word here).

As for what she was born with, clearly she has a mind as sharp as a bag full of razors.

The more interesting question might be does she think Merlin is a Seijin, or possibly think him an archangel?
