Now one of the tools I’ve noticed writers using, is when setting a character up for a nasty fall, is to demonize them as much as possible.
In Clyntahn’s case, DW has certainly succeeded in creating a veritable human demon. One, not only directly responsible for millions of deaths, but also the inhuman torture of tens of thousands.
So I ask again what should be the fate of such a creature?
There’s a saying: Death is too good for someone like that!
My own solution in Clyntahn’s case would be to have him live out the remainder of his life in a padded “super-max” cell, deprived of everything of meaning in his life, with only one of OWL’s servitors to see that he had water and nutrient gruel for sustenance. Maybe a view screen with carefully edited glimpses of Safehold evolving in ways beyond his imaginings.
Clyntahn is a megalomaniac depraved and licentious glutton. Taking away his power, and the means to satiate his appetites would hurt him more then death.

I think that MWW has already offered us a possible solution!
Clyntahn, Rayno, anyone who merits the treatment is put into a VR suit like Ohlyvya's and gets to visit a virtual HE-double toothpicks hosted by our favorite cyber ghost Nahrmann as commander in chief of pitchforks!

It is the policy of the Empire that once you determine that someone is an inquisitor, they are subject to summary execution. Clyntahn is an inquisitor, and I expect the Imperial Policy on inquisitors to be carried out, in about 5 seconds.

Hi Guys

It may be worthwhile remembering that, from Merlin's point of view, Clyntahn's actions is producing exactly what Safehold needs to develop if humanity is to survive their next meeting with the Gbaba.

My vote is for a quick execution and I also think this action will fit nicely with the image Charis needs to maintain if Safeholdians are to follow them into the next adventure.

If you want a form of poetic justice for Clyntath, just think after the war a Federation version of armorplast is used to build a cell in front of the Temple. One hole for body waste, one hole for Safeholdian MREs. A guard chamber prevents anyone unauthorized from getting him a knife or poison. He gets to live out his life as a zoo animal eating food he wouldn't feed a rat. If you REALLY want to twist his knickers, let someone try to cut a hole in the wall and watch his response. As to getting him in custody, SNARC's micro remotes had incendiary charges. Replace the charges with micro syringes of sedatives and wait until he is outside the Temple and have a couple of Nynian's people waiting. Give the monster a said-a-give (sorry, I couldn't resist)

I think that there needs to be a trial with evidence, accusers and witnesses. There is enough to convict the man a hundred times over. Then execute him quickly and cleanly... not for his sake but that Safehold might see the difference between vengeance and justice fairly and impartially administered.

Logic and reason says you’re correct seen in the context of a modern society.
But Safehold at its present state of development ; in spite of race to industrialize; is still in the mind set of a medieval society. I doubt that they would consider a simple rope sufficient closure.

The main problem with an execution is having one that is not a Inquisition V 2.0 while also not starting a couple of dozen True Believers urban myths. No matter what is done, someone would say the condemned wasn't him or something similar. If he was imprisoned in full view of the public, anyone could look and say "that's him alright". There is also the side effect on movers and shakers that "You" can be brought to account for your deeds, even if they don't warrant death.

Let's see. Clyntahn has rarely (never?)left the Temple grounds since seizing power. So only those who enter the Temple grounds can have seen him recently enough to know what he looks like. Which means that you could be executing absolutely anybody for all the average inhabitant of Zion can tell, never mind those living on the other side of the world. Which means that it doesn't matter what you do, there will be people saying that he's still alive. Look how many legends we have here on Earth about lost kings sleeping under mountains, to awake and save their believers in time of peril.

Cheers

John

Welcome to the forums, enjoy your favorite simulated beverage on the simulated roof. ;)

Clyntahn has carefully kept the army far away from Zion, to prevent any military coup, so expecting Maigwair to be the key for that is assuming way too much.

Magwair might be more influential with the Temple Guard, but past threads give Duchairn his own links into them.
