Already used, albeit unintentionally.

Basically, set a native Safehold forest on fire. Said forest is full of oily plants that when burned, produce huge clouds that irritate eyes and (IIRC) throats. Have wind blow said smoke into enemies faces.

This was done to Dohlarans and Desnairans IIRC when the Charisians blocked their supply lines. The forest fire was a side effect of using gunpowder weaponry in woods full of flammable stuff.

That was an accident, and could've hit the Charisians if the wind had been blowing differently.

I wouldn't call that using a battlefield chemical irritant - I'd call that hazardous terrain.

You could maybe use fire vine/derivative products to create a battlefield irritant, but I think it'd be a lot more useful against a defender than an attacking force.

Doesn't most of this stuff wind up in the realm of being so dangerous to everybody that it's best left alone?

Imagine its first use giving the Temple ideas that they could implement indicriminately... Talk about nightmare scenarios...

I don't think that the Temple could produce something really effective in therms of WMD. Probably some primitive chemical weapon, like sulfur compounds, would be the best that they could achieve. It may be handy in some tactical situation - for example, the siege of fortresses - but it isn't something that could change the course of war.

Oh well, if shortening the front is what the Germans crave,
Let's shorten it to very end - the length of Fuhrer's grave.

Imagine rakurai in downtown Tellesberg with chemical weapons... Once it's been done and the idea is planted, someone like Brother Lynchin can probaby figure out how to come up with limited quantities. It wouldn't take much to cause a whole lot of trouble.

If they have to protect crops from Safehold insects, they may have recipes for pesticides. I hope not.

IIRC, the colonists started off with genetically engineered high yield crops. The crops may well be insect resistant enough on their own to not require pesticides, or at least mitigate the need for pesticides enough that the "Archangels" didn't give it to them.

Oh yes, i could really imagine the thousands of Temple's agents, sneaking through the Charisian borders with the canisters of gas on the back. ;) The primitive gases, that is avaliable to the Church, would be effective only in great concentration. Otherwise, the Temple agents themselves would suffer from it more that the attended victims.

They'd have better luck - which isn't to say a promising time of it - manufacturing their chemical weapons once they're inside the Empire. That may mean smuggling in some components/equipment, but for the most part, they'd do better to buy and assemble them there. Unfortunately for the Temple, the best gear and chemicals are certain to be built and available for purchase in Charis anyway.
