There's more than one energy source under the Temple. We don't know for sure but it would make sense if there's more than one surprise from more than one archangel.

Merlin's been afraid to act directly against the Temple, but he can't avoid it forever. Something's bound to wake up for some reason. At that point he should have some well-researched anti-Temple weapons ready to hand.

I agree. It wouldn't surprise me if Owl and Narmahn are already working on that. I do think he wants to finish this stage of the war before he tackles what's under the Temple.

There's also more than one way to conduct espionage.

Who takes out the trash from the Temple, and where does it go?

Who cleans up the offices at night?

I keep keying (no pun intended) on two points. Paityr Wylsyn said that there's a control panel in the temple that can activate some kind of protection for the temple that can be used only once -and- his uncles would never have used it for the schism, but only for something like armies marching on the Temple.

I am fairly confident that somewhere - in Pearls, posts or books themselves, I don't remember now - there are mentions of holy servitors working in the temple. Inasmuch as buying/convincing the staff would be a good idea, sci-fi Roombas don't make very good HUMINT.

Also, don't forget that (spoiler alert, I suppose?) the Helm Cleaver has its agents in the Temple, like this Inquisitor buying Macbeth's wine. He's probably not the only one, so I guess in-Temple intel is as good as possible.

Every now and then someone suggests that colonization ships might still be around. For the Langhorne crew to drop them in the sun would be like Sauron casting the One Ring into Mount Doom.

They'd be deliberately hard to find. Scouting for them at random would be a waste of time.

OWL has TF IFF and command codes. Broadcast, with his favorite LPI radio, the command "Wake up and report your position".

-------------------

Here's an idea taken from Arthur Clarke.

If an OWL remote at a safe distance can image Clyntahn gloating over a victim on a platform in the Plaza of Martyrs, then by definition it has line of sight access.

One millisecond of 20th century technology, a laser pulse into Clyntahn's eyes, and Clyntahn will never be able to read a report or a facial expression again.

Merlin hates the idea of appearing to be supernatural, for multiple good reasons. For something like this I'd make an exception if I were him.

Would it risk triggering the OBS? Repeat the steam engine experiments. Find a remote island, have an OWL remote with a laser pointer play with a cat.
